The story not only captured the daily life and traditions of the Hidatsa culture but also the resilience of native communities in the face of changing times.\r\n\r\nFirst, I introduced my students to the story by showing pictures of the Hidatsa earth-lodge villages and had a discussion on what they know about the roles of Native American women. Then my students read the book independently. For the second read they answered questions as they listened to the book on EdPuzzle. On the next day we discussed the daily tasks Buffalo Bird Girl performed and how the Hidatsa lived in harmony with nature. We also discussed what we learned about the different roles family members played and then compared them to how we live today. We discussed the importance of agriculture, hunting, and the seasonal cycles that sustained their community. For the final project we created a timeline of the key events in Buffalo Bird Girl's life, including drawings and descriptions of important cultural practices. \r\n\r\nI really appreciate the opportunity to get to share another Native American story with my class and for the future classes to come.
