I'll never forget the smiles and gasps when we set up our new kitchen center. One student proudly said, \"Now we can cook just like grown-ups!\" They immediately began \"baking\" muffins, sorting pretend fruits and vegetables, and setting the table for their friends. Through this kind of play, they're learning early math and literacy skills, like counting plates, identifying colors, and writing menus.\r\n\r\nOur car learning center has also become a classroom favorite. The children use the toy cars to practice sorting, counting, and mapping.\r\n\r\nThese hands-on experiences have helped my students develop important fine motor skills, teamwork, and language. They are having so much fun that they don't even realize how much they're learning! For many of them, this kind of pretend play is brand new, and it's amazing to see their imaginations grow every day.\r\n\r\nWe will continue to expand on these centers, adding role-play lessons about community helpers, grocery store math, and transportation safety. We have talked in length about all the different emotions we may feel and how to handle them. I showed them the items we have in our calm down corner and how they will help when we are experiencing big emotions. Plus, the amount of writing that is required now has increased drastically. So the best way to get my students excited about writing was sharing all these resources with them. They love the new light table with the translucent letters. They can build words on it and then transfer the words to paper with our new class set of classic markers. They love being able to build the words using the new reading games and then writing the new words with the fun new pencils. These fun new items such as new plates and cups, a teapot and saucer, a hand mixer, new wooden food, a sandwich and salad maker, and so much more has stirred up some major excitement in our classroom.
