Lights out reading is a new favorite that we do every Friday. \r\n\r\nMy students also love sitting in the large spinning \"teacher\" chair when they have to complete difficult work, or work on their iPads. Two students can fit on a chair and they also love to sit and partner read. \r\n\r\nOur bulletin board, full of Polaroids, shows off students competing their work to anyone who walks through our hallway. Whether it's playing a favorite game or enjoying a snack together, these moments help create a sense of comfort and connection for students who need it most.\r\n\r\nYour donation has made it possible for us to provide not only a place of relaxation and enjoyment but also essential therapeutic resources that empower our students to better manage their emotions and build healthy coping strategies. The \"Little Book about Culture\" and \"Dancing Hands\" are some of the most commonly read since their release into our class library. I have had my class and students from other classes pull it off the shelves that are full of a variety of literature and informational texts. It doesn't matter their age or cultural background, they were drawn to them. Although I have a significant percentage of kids with a Filipino and/or Alaska Native background, I should mention that they are quick to grab from the Cultures book bin that has been well-supported thanks to this DonorsChoose project that you helped to fund.\r\nOut of 13 books, I have 4 of them that I will highlight during our study of the Civil Rights Era and the Alaska Native Rights era in our 4th literacy/social studies unit. So, sadly but excitedly, I haven't shared those copies of text in the way I have the other texts. However, stories like \"I Survived the Great Alaska Earthquake, 1964\" and \"Call of the Wild\" will be star reading books in our 3rd literacy unit for the Adventure genre study. My fifth graders will also be writing their own adventure/survival (sub-genre) stories and will be analyzing the authors' development of plot and conflict in these texts. The kids are able to pull out any of the books that catch their eye. The graphic novel version of \"Call of the Wild\" has introduced 2 students so far to Jack London who might have otherwise been intimidated by the older prose. Although not geared towards students, I have had many adults comment on the memoir of \"Fifty Miles from Tomorrow\" and have met the author, Willie Hensley. I'm so pleased to be able to share these stories with kids for years to come.
