One of our end of year activities is a Mo Willems day. We spend time reading books, reviewing them, drawing the characters, and making our own Pigeon or Elephant and Piggie books! These books arrived just in time for these activities! The students LOVED getting a chance to read so many different books by him. \r\nThese books are also wonderful for my students who are still beginning readers. There are not too many words and many words that they can sound out. They love feeling included in our independent and partner reading time. I have taught every grade k-6. I have also taught in Europe. With all of these transitions my class library has many holes. This project helped provide some books to fit some of the categories where I do not have books. I went from sixth to kindergarten to first grade the past three years and all of these grades really have different needs. Also when I have different students they also have different interests. My students this year love graphic novels. They also are very interested in animals. This project provided books from a few new series for them to try as well as so easy reader nonfiction books about animals the class picked. They are diverse not only in their background and cultures but also in their needs. I have students who came in being able to read basically anything and others who did not do kindergarten and have many gaps. Writing is the area where many of my students struggle. The fine motor aspect is challenging god then which increases the cognitive load of actually forming the letters to write. This project provided slant boards. These boards help make writing easier because the board is angled at a more natural position. This project provided boards for kids to use at their seats as well as dry erase slang boards for me to use in my small groups. This is very important so that students can get as much individualized instruction as possible. They were so excited and amazed when these books randomly showed up in the library thank you to your generous support! The looks on their faces was priceless. They began practicing sight words at home. Soon they could read the words in the books. Once they discovered they could read the books they never looked back devouring book after book after book! Reading is a skill that is essential. Most my students entered as emergent readers. I just couldn't keep up with them with the collection I had. This project provided a bunch of books in their must read lists.
