Throughout the story Melody, the main character, shows her resilience, determination, and intelligence by experiencing events that my students can relate to. When we read, everyone finds a cozy spot and we usually read about 1-2 chapters at a time. Students take turns reading a loud and building their fluency! The amount of compassion this story generates is incredible. We had amazing investment in the story as a whole as the kids were compelled throughout. Additionally, students were empathetic to the protagonist as she navigated a very similar age group at her school and felt very other. The character showed perseverance despite challenges and gave the book appropriate and applicable meaning. The novel, Out of my Mind, opened up discussions about acceptance, inclusion, prejudice, and more. \r\n\r\nWhen we read a novel such as this, all students have a copy of the book. Generally, I as the teacher, read aloud and they follow along. I stop along the way and students collectively fill in the words where I stop. In addition, we pause frequently for understanding and have related conversations as well to deepen the messages in the book. We identify author's authentic examples of things like figurative language and other narrative techniques and literary devices. This allows for a natural way to teach, mention, and discuss these concepts which happen to also be part of our 5th grade curriculum. Novels, this one especially, provide a perfect place for students to see how impactful language in writing can be.","fullyFundedDate":1744258086345,"projectUrl":"project/books-for-class-reading-about-acceptance/9228022/","projectTitle":"Books for Class Reading About Acceptance and Inclusivity!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Vachon","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1842147_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1525046110839","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/biel"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_37223","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":624,"numTeachers":21,"percentFrplEligible":38,"percentAsian":31,"percentBlack":7,"percentWhite":31,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":16,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"29.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":82.8,"schoolId":37223,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Los Penasquitos Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Los Penasquitos Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/poway-unified-school-district/los-penasquitos-elementary-school/37223"}
