Students help each other when an issue arises, check in on friends when they are hurt and are aware of how others are doing throughout the day.\r\n\r\nWe have used the emotion characters as a read aloud. These characters have helped us to identify our emotions and regulate our feelings when we feel overwhelmed. Students know that when we might feel uncomfortable, we can \"spot\" the emotion, calm our minds and bodies and be ready to learn or verbalize our thoughts.\r\n\r\nIt has been amazing to hear students find their voices and let others know their perspectives. These books helped us to better connect to other students around the world and understand that school and getting an education can look different for students. School can be outside, a far distance from homes and supplies may be limited. We are grateful to broaden our knowledge about school around the world with the books you purchased for us.\r\n\r\nThe frog books added to our genius by teaching us new facts about different types of frogs. We used the books to research the characteristics of the frogs and how those characteristics were unique and help frogs to adapt to their environment. We used the research to create essays to share with our families. In the end, we felt like we were true frog researchers!\r\n\r\nAgain, we are thankful for the variety of books we received and loved reading about frogs, dinosaurs, water and schools around the world. We studied the characters and their traits in detail. This helped us to create Thinglink projects, dioramas, next chapters of a book and book covers, which were all inspired by the Katherine Applegate books. Students had great ideas about how to demonstrate their learning and thinking about the concepts learned.\r\n\r\nReading is a collaborative space where we read and discuss questions and answers about the books we are reading. This year we have completed small group and whole group book studies. We often write about our reading to show we understand what has happened and implications of future events in the stories.\r\n\r\nHere are some statements from students: \"Odder is a very exciting book with twists and turns that really turned the tides. I really liked discussing the part where Odder breaks out of her cell.\" \"In Wilodeen, I like how she speaks to the church to show she cares about how the issues have effected the city.\" \"I like how in Crenshaw can break into Jackson's house and he does not even have to ask.\" \"I liked Wilodeen because of all the fantasy elements.\" \"I liked when Jackson found Crenshaw in the bathtub with the bubble beard.\" \"I liked how Crenshaw is an invisible friend and an imaginary friend, but Aretha can still sense he is there even though he is invisible.\" \"I liked when Odder did not like her baby and eventually liked her.\"\r\n\r\nThanks again for allowing us to experience other worlds through reading!","fullyFundedDate":1740338983114,"projectUrl":"project/we-love-reading-so-we-built-a-library/9085478/","projectTitle":"We Love Reading, So We Built a Library","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Cordova","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9225834"},{"teacherId":9225834,"projectId":8933345,"letterContent":"Each month, the Science Adventure club (students ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade) meets for one hour to learn about scientific topics. I shared with them why I wanted these materials for our classroom and what the purpose of them was. \r\n\r\nThe flexible seating that was part of our project has been the biggest hit. The students had an idea of taking turns each day using them. A student's leadership role is the \"whiteboard leader\", where they write who is using the chairs that day. It is clear the flexible seating option is appealing to the students. They get to do their work in a different spot other than just their desk, and the choice of using the seating keeps them engaged. \r\n\r\nStudents also were very excited to explore the social-emotional tools that were placed in our calming corner. I am so glad to provide an outlet for students when they are needing space to feel how they are feeling. \r\n\r\nNext steps for our classroom would be finding more flexible seating so more kids can move throughout the classroom. \r\n\r\nThank you so much from me and my little leaders!","fullyFundedDate":1727462810226,"projectUrl":"project/leaders-today-leading-tomorrow/8573794/","projectTitle":"Leaders Today, Leading Tomorrow!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Stanhope","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9632213"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_53175","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":361,"numTeachers":24,"percentFrplEligible":46,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":71,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":22,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":93.0,"schoolId":53175,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Lopez Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Lopez Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/colorado/poudre-school-district/lopez-elementary-school/53175"}
