We are using the new books daily during circle time, small-group instruction, and individual work sessions to support early literacy, communication, and engagement. Many of my students are nonverbal or have emerging communication skills, so the visuals, repetitive language, and interactive elements of the books have been incredibly helpful. One special moment was seeing students independently reach for the books during free choice time and sit with peers or adults to look through the pages, point to pictures, and engage in shared reading—something that was much more limited before we had these resources.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the books, their reactions were heartwarming. Several students smiled, clapped, and immediately gravitated toward the colorful pictures. Others carefully explored the pages, practicing turn-taking and gentle handling of materials. For some of my students, simply sitting and attending to a book, even for a short period of time, is a big accomplishment. These books have helped increase attention, reduce frustration, and create more positive experiences around reading and learning.\r\n\r\nOur next steps include using these books to build consistent routines around story time and to support specific IEP goals such as communication, joint attention, and following simple directions. We will also begin incorporating simple comprehension activities, picture matching, and vocabulary building related to the stories. Your generosity has helped create a more engaging, language-rich environment for my students, and these books will continue to support their growth as they build foundational skills they will need as they prepare to transition into TK and beyond.","fullyFundedDate":1769205405752,"projectUrl":"project/reading-is-fun/10046046/","projectTitle":"Reading Is Fun","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Rodriguez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2024033_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1544562487754","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2024033"},{"teacherId":2024033,"projectId":9683899,"letterContent":"We are using the new resources daily to support communication, sensory regulation, and engagement for our nonverbal preschool students. One of our favorite moments has been during small-group instruction, where students use the materials to make choices, follow simple routines, and participate in turn-taking activities. The resources have allowed students who typically struggle to engage to remain focused longer and actively participate using gestures, visuals, and assisted communication.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the new materials, their excitement was immediate and clear. Many smiled, reached out, vocalized, or eagerly explored the items. Some students who are typically hesitant showed curiosity and engagement right away. It was wonderful to see them motivated and interested, especially students who often need extra encouragement to participate.\r\n\r\nThe next steps include expanding the use of these materials across daily routines such as circle time, centers, and social play. We will continue building communication skills by encouraging students to use the resources to request, make choices, and interact with peers. These tools will also support IEP goals related to attention, fine motor development, and social interaction. As students grow more familiar with the materials, we will gradually increase expectations to promote independence and confidence.","fullyFundedDate":1760729824158,"projectUrl":"project/little-minds-big-hearts/9683899/","projectTitle":"Little Minds, Big Hearts","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Rodriguez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2024033_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1544562487754","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2024033"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_105004","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":130,"numTeachers":4,"percentFrplEligible":35,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":91,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - Pre-K","studentTeacherRatio":"32.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Record","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":63.5,"schoolId":105004,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Longfellow Pre-Kindergarten School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Longfellow Pre-Kindergarten School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/azusa-unified-school-district/longfellow-azusa-unified-special-education/105004"}
