When the \"I Survived\" books arrived, my students were beyond excited. Many of them had heard about the series, but this was their first time having access to such a wide selection. The best part? They had *choice*. Watching their faces light up as they picked out which historical event they wanted to read about was truly special. These books opened a door for reluctant readers and deepened the engagement of those who already loved reading.\r\n\r\nWe used these books as part of a larger literacy unit, allowing students to select titles that matched their interests and then share their reflections through discussion, writing, and creative projects.\r\n\r\nOne memorable moment came when a lively discussion occurred as they debated which disaster was the worst. Some argued that surviving the Titanic was the most terrifying, while others insisted that the destruction of Pompeii was far more intense. They backed up their opinions with evidence from the books, comparing the characters' experiences and the real-life impact of each event. It was incredible to see them so passionately engaged—not only with the stories but also with each other as critical thinkers and respectful debaters!\r\n It sparked thoughtful conversations not only about the events but also about empathy and resilience.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we're excited to build on this momentum. Our next step is to introduce graphic novels, including adaptations of the \"I Survived\" stories, to further engage visual learners and those still building reading confidence. Your contribution made a real difference in our classroom, and we're so grateful for your support in helping our students grow as curious, confident readers.","fullyFundedDate":1741732429591,"projectUrl":"project/i-survived-this-novel-project/9153173/","projectTitle":"I Survived This Novel Project!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Militzer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9938207_orig.png?crop=200,200,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1744388217619","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9938207"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_97947","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":727,"numTeachers":36,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":40,"percentWhite":33,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":10,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"20.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":70.2,"schoolId":97947,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Linden Grove Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Linden Grove Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/kalamazoo-public-school-district/linden-grove-middle-school/97947"}
