We received the materials in January, and we began utilizing the books in language therapy with my students on IEPs (Individualized Education Plans), this month - Black History Month! We have read Sulwe by Lupita N'Yongo as well as Mae Among the Stars by Roda Ahmed, about Dr. Mae Jemison, the first black female astronaut! My students have enjoyed the stories and illustrations as we have paused to summarize, reflect, and predict what might happen next in each story. I have also purchased TeacherPayTeachers materials to pair with the books, to support extensions of our learning and recall of vocabulary and story details to ensure adequate comprehension and word learning.\r\n\r\nReading Sulwe brought up a lot of questions about race and racism for my students, as I serve many students from Latin America and the Marshall Islands. We discussed how we feel about our skin, but more importantly, what makes us amazing and beautiful, our hearts and minds! We made \"I love Myself\" clouds to hang in the speech therapy office, stating \"I am ___\", \"I have ___\", \"I can ____\" and \"I AM BEAUTIFUL.\"\r\n\r\nWhen we read Mae Among the Stars this week, we pondered about not only Mae's dream to become an astronaut and see earth from outer space, but our own greatest desires and dreams and what we want to do and be when we grow up. Some of my students shared wanting to be a teacher, a police office, and a Safeway clerk :)\r\n\r\nThere were many materials with Spanish vocabulary/Latin culture in the collection, but I am selecting them strategically to align with themes in therapy, such as travel, family, food, music, etc. Since March is Women's History Month, we will likely delve into the books The Story of Frida Kahlo and Be Bold! Be Brave! 11 Latinas who made U.S. History. I can't wait for all my students to explore the accomplishments of women throughout history, especially women than reflect their cultural upbringing. \r\n\r\nI know these books are engaging for my students, and I am seeing it reflected in their enthusiasm, attention to task, and retention of what we are discussing/learning. We can't thank you enough! The white boards and markers are also going to good use, as we use them to practice not only speaking/listening in therapy, but spelling conventions and writing accurate sentences structures.","fullyFundedDate":1735679392328,"projectUrl":"project/diverse-books-and-materials-for-language/8748948/","projectTitle":"Diverse Books and Materials for Language and Literacy Intervention","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Swink","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9253628_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1736797344274","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9253628"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_36419","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":447,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":89,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":35,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":52,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"1 - 5","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":67.9,"schoolId":36419,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Harriet Rowley Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Harriet Rowley Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/washington/mount-vernon-school-district-320/lincoln-elementary-school/36419"}
