The themed sand bins have also been a great way for our students to engage in more cooperative play with one another and staff. \r\n\r\nStudents have also enjoyed the new additions to our calming corner such as the weighted dinosaur and sequence blanket. All of these books are going to and have been a great way for my students to feel represented in literature. In many books students with disabilities are not always represented. Many of my students are nonverbal and use communication devices in their day to day lives. One of the books, A Day Without Words is about a student who uses a communication device. I chose this as one of the books to read first. It was heartwarming to see the smiles and joy on my students faces when they saw a character that was just like them. \r\n\r\nIn my classroom we usually read as a small or whole group. When we read depending on the skill level of the students in each group, I will either read the story aloud or we will read together as a group taking turns reading. To guage comprehension of a text, I will build an activity to go with it or as I read I will stop and ask students questions where they can answer directly with the text like pointing at the images. \r\n\r\nOne of our students loves reading and really enjoys social emotional learing activities. The student always asks to looks at the book independently after reading and will carry it aroud with them throughout the day. \r\n\r\nThank you again for your donation to our classroom and giving my students the opprotunity to see themselves represented in literature.","fullyFundedDate":1733495584940,"projectUrl":"project/diverse-and-inclusive-literature/8946090/","projectTitle":"Diverse and Inclusive Literature","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Salas","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9838186"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_39980","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":490,"numTeachers":27,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":6,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":86,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"18.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":83.1,"schoolId":39980,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Leonora Fillmore Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Leonora Fillmore Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/lompoc-unified-school-district/leonora-fillmore-elementary-school/39980"}
