We used it to explore the nitrogen cycle in real time — connecting the conversion of ammonia (NH₃) by nitrifying bacteria into nitrite and nitrate to how plants and fish depend on each other for survival. Students set up the aquaponic system, tested water samples for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels, and tracked changes over several weeks to see how the system balanced itself. It was an incredible hands-on way to connect classroom chemistry to real-world environmental science.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the hydroponics system, they were ecstatic! There was a genuine buzz of excitement as they unpacked the materials and started planning what to grow first. Even students from last year stopped by, saying how jealous they were that this year's class gets to watch their plants develop while studying the chemistry behind it. That enthusiasm has carried over into class discussions — students are constantly asking questions and offering ideas for how to optimize the system for better plant growth or healthier fish.\r\n\r\nNext, my students will continue monitoring the water chemistry to maintain a balanced ecosystem, recording data on pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate concentrations. They'll use that data to create graphs and analyze how the levels fluctuate over time, drawing connections to the nitrogen cycle and conservation of matter. Later in the semester, we'll expand the project by comparing plant growth in the aquaponic system versus traditional soil-based methods. This ongoing experiment gives students ownership of their learning and helps them see the relevance of chemistry in sustaining life and promoting environmental balance.","fullyFundedDate":1754844901559,"projectUrl":"project/chemistry-in-a-fish-tank-lets-go/9413412/","projectTitle":"Chemistry in a Fish Tank?!
