Your generosity helped create a meaningful and memorable experience as students began building relationships and developing a sense of community with their new classmates. Students shared many laughs as they tossed red balls to one another and participated in icebreakers that encouraged them to step outside of their comfort zones and get to know each other. During our relay race, students worked together in their homerooms, demonstrating teamwork, communication, friendly competition, and problem-solving skills. One of the highlights was the sponge-and-bucket relay, where students became highly engaged and began thinking outside the box to create strategies for filling their buckets as quickly as possible. It was wonderful to see students realize that listening to one another, sharing ideas, and working together could help their entire team succeed. Students also felt special when they had the opportunity to sign their names on their underclass banner, creating a lasting reminder that they are now part of a new community.\r\n\r\nThe materials you provided also allowed students to express themselves creatively and vulnerably. Students especially enjoyed choosing from different colored markers to create personal timelines and detailed stories about important moments in their lives before starting high school. This activity created a powerful opportunity for students to share pieces of their stories with one another, leading to moments of vulnerability, laughter, connection, and lasting memories within their advisory groups. Students also used the pens, pencils, and envelopes to write letters to their future senior selves. These letters will be sealed and saved so they can open them during their senior year and reflect on who they were as incoming freshmen, the goals they had, and how much they have grown. The name tags were another simple but meaningful resource that helped students learn and remember one another's names, while also giving parents an opportunity to connect and get to know each other during orientation. The excitement students showed when they first saw and used these materials demonstrated how much they valued having opportunities to create, share, and connect.\r\n\r\nThese resources will continue to make an impact long after the retreat. Throughout the next four years, students will continue using the markers and other materials to strengthen relationships and build community through projects such as creating banners, setting goals for the school year, and decorating cupcakes to celebrate birthdays and important milestones. The red rubber balls will continue to be used for icebreakers and activities that help students learn more about one another, while the name tags will reinforce students' ability to learn and remember each other's names. Our next step is to build upon the strong foundation created during the retreat by continuing to give students opportunities to collaborate, celebrate one another, reflect on their growth, and share their stories. What began as a 9th grade retreat will continue to foster relationships and create memories throughout their high school journey.
