We used it to explore the nitrogen cycle in real time — connecting the conversion of ammonia (NH₃) by nitrifying bacteria into nitrite and nitrate to how plants and fish depend on each other for survival. Students set up the aquaponic system, tested water samples for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels, and tracked changes over several weeks to see how the system balanced itself. It was an incredible hands-on way to connect classroom chemistry to real-world environmental science.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the hydroponics system, they were ecstatic! There was a genuine buzz of excitement as they unpacked the materials and started planning what to grow first. Even students from last year stopped by, saying how jealous they were that this year's class gets to watch their plants develop while studying the chemistry behind it. That enthusiasm has carried over into class discussions — students are constantly asking questions and offering ideas for how to optimize the system for better plant growth or healthier fish.\r\n\r\nNext, my students will continue monitoring the water chemistry to maintain a balanced ecosystem, recording data on pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate concentrations. They'll use that data to create graphs and analyze how the levels fluctuate over time, drawing connections to the nitrogen cycle and conservation of matter. Later in the semester, we'll expand the project by comparing plant growth in the aquaponic system versus traditional soil-based methods. This ongoing experiment gives students ownership of their learning and helps them see the relevance of chemistry in sustaining life and promoting environmental balance.","fullyFundedDate":1754844901559,"projectUrl":"project/chemistry-in-a-fish-tank-lets-go/9413412/","projectTitle":"Chemistry in a Fish Tank?! Your generosity provided interactive STEM materials that transformed learning from passive worksheets into hands-on exploration and real scientific thinking.\r\n\r\nWith your support, students who were once hesitant now feel confident investigating, building, testing, and discovering. The interactive models and STEM tools you funded turned abstract concepts into real experiences they could touch, see, and understand. Suddenly, DNA isn't just a chapter — it's something we can model. Circuits aren't just diagrams — they're challenges we can engineer. Learning has become an adventure, one spark at a time.\r\n\r\nMore than materials, you gave my students opportunities — to explore like scientists, think like engineers, and dream like innovators. Many of them come from communities where access to STEM tools is limited, but thanks to you, they now feel capable, inspired, and excited about their future.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in the power of education that lights a fire inside students — not just in their minds, but in their hearts. The popcorn machine, prizes, and positive incentives you helped provide became more than classroom rewards — they became powerful tools for motivation, relationship-building, and academic growth.\r\n\r\nStudents who once struggled to participate are now raising their hands, engaging in labs, and celebrating learning milestones. Popcorn Fridays became a symbol of teamwork and consistency. The prize table encouraged students to set goals and take pride in their progress. Most importantly, these rewards helped create a warm and welcoming classroom where every student feels seen, encouraged, and valued.\r\n\r\nFor many of my students, school has not always been a place of success. But when learning became fun—when science came with smiles and surprises—walls came down, curiosity came alive, and students began to truly believe in themselves. Your support didn't just fund incentives—you helped build a classroom community rooted in hope, effort, and belonging.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving us more than materials.
