We had just made a section of the classroom a peaceful, cozy space with soft seating, calming visuals, and a variety of sensory tools, such as stress balls, Kyle koala mindfulness breathing lamp, fidgets and calming jars filled with glitter. To introduce the materials, I gathered the class in a circle and explained that the Calm Corner was a special space designed for when they needed a break to breathe, relax, or focus their thoughts. I showed them how the tools worked and gave them a chance to explore each one. It was important to me that the students understood this space was not for punishment but for self-care and managing big emotions.\r\nAs we began using the Calm Corner, I noticed my students gravitated toward the space when they felt overwhelmed, frustrated, or just needed a moment of peace. One specific classroom moment stands out: during a math lesson, a student began to feel anxious about an upcoming test. Rather than spiraling, they quietly asked to use the Calm Corner. I encouraged them to take a break and return when they felt ready. Within minutes, I saw the student sitting on the floor with the calming jars, watching the glitter swirl slowly down. It was a beautiful sight—watching them use the tools to reset and find their focus.\r\nIncorporating these resources into our routine has had a profound impact on my students' emotional well-being and focus. They've learned to recognize when they need a break, and they no longer hesitate to ask for help when they're feeling overwhelmed. The Calm Corner has become a go-to space not just for managing stress but also for regrouping after moments of frustration or social conflict. I've seen my students become more self-aware and able to regulate their emotions more effectively, which has improved their overall engagement and performance in class.
