I was moved to tears at the gratitude on their faces. My next step is to be able to supply my students with some basic at home supplies to help them successfully complete projects and homework assignments. Now that they have physical books, they can read and complete work at home. This is such a valuable aspect of having books because it mimics higher education, where students are expected to have the reading done before they enter the classroom or lecture hall. Then when they come to class, they can really dig deep through discussions and various exercises to analyze and evaluate the work. \r\n\r\nWhen we read in the classroom, students take turns reading small sections, which is invaluable for their oration skills. Additionally, I have given students sticky notes and tabs, which they have been using liberally to annotate the book. They tab any page that describes the water/ocean/sea because this is an important motif in The Awakening. On their sticky notes, they write notes about what's happening, literary devices in use, and how sections make them feel. All of this is integral because they will be expected to do so on the AP test in a timed environment and in higher education.\r\n\r\nI can't pinpoint any particular student who enjoys the books more than the others, because they are all excited about having the printed novels in their hands. Truly, they (and myself) are grateful for this opportunity to further their education.
