The sandbox now has a fresh supply of sand, sparking excitement as students immediately began building intricate structures and testing concepts like stability and weight distribution. In the mud kitchen, the addition of new supplies encouraged imaginative play and collaboration as students mixed \"recipes\" and experimented with natural textures. Fairy garden materials brought an extra layer of enchantment, with students eagerly designing tiny landscapes while discussing the ecosystems that support plant growth and wildlife. The watercolor paints opened opportunities for artistic expression as students painted scenes from nature walks, blending creativity with their observations of the environment. Their joy and curiosity were palpable as they explored these new materials, quickly envisioning all the possibilities for play, learning, and discovery.\r\n\r\nThe next steps for our students include incorporating these materials into hands-on STEM challenges and outdoor lessons. For example, the sandbox will be used for a design-and-build challenge where students construct earthquake-resistant structures, while the mud kitchen will serve as the backdrop for lessons on measurement and the properties of soil and water. Fairy garden materials will inspire a unit on habitats, as students create miniature ecosystems and study the plants and insects they attract. Meanwhile, watercolor paints will play a role in science and mindfulness activities, such as painting plant life cycles or reflecting on how spending time outdoors impacts their mental well-being. These resources are more than just tools—they are catalysts for deep, experiential learning that will help students strengthen their problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity skills. As we move forward, the focus will be on integrating these materials into curriculum-aligned lessons while nurturing a sense of wonder and connection to the natural world.","fullyFundedDate":1733235425873,"projectUrl":"project/add-a-little-sunshine-to-outdoor-inquiry/8906189/","projectTitle":"Add a Little Sunshine to Outdoor Inquiry!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Valentine","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3803669_272x272.png?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1484758321377","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3803669"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_6124","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":866,"numTeachers":61,"percentFrplEligible":85,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":62,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":14,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"14.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":68.0,"schoolId":6124,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Lakewood Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Lakewood Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/south-carolina/horry-county-school-district/lakewood-elementary-school/6124"}
