Prior to receiving your generous donations of graphic novels to expand our library, we primarily had old chapter books and picture books - which the students were NOT excited to read! Now that we have three large bins on our bookshelf FILLED with graphic novels, the kids actually look forward to the independent reading time at the end of the period. Furthermore, they have taken to borrowing the books to read at home for fun (and bringing them back the next day because they devour them so quickly!) and borrowing them to read during lunchtime when they want a quiet lunch experience. \r\n\r\nWe know that students who read for pleasure grow more quickly in their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension than peers who do not read for pleasure. Having many dozens of books that allow students to look forward to reading independently and to seek out reading for pleasure will complement the hard skills that they're learning in my classroom and allow them truly finish this year as thriving readers.
