These activities were an extension of a unit in which students learned about how electricity flows in circuits. \r\n\r\nThey created circuits by connecting the solar panels to a light/sound board. They tested the circuits' energy output by placing them in various areas in the classroom, such as the window or under the lights used in our science experiments to grow flowers. They discovered that different items on the light/sound board required different amounts of energy to power. They also opened and closed these circuits to explore Morse Code. \r\n\r\nStudents completed circuits using the turbine kits and measured their electrical output using multimeters. They explored the energy output of a fan at different speeds and then applied their prior knowledge of circuits to create a classroom series circuit and explored how this affects the overall electrical output.\r\n\r\nThey were so excited to have a chance to experiment and explore with these hands on kits and I was excited to see them applying their prior knowledge of circuits with these lessons. I plan to expand this unit further to include learning about what environmental engineers do and the importance of sustainability. Thank you so very much for funding my classroom! The Crazy Circuits bit boards attach to the lego rover to hold each Micro:bit, expanding its coding capabilities. Students then attached the wires to the wheels, claw, and power source. This required following directions and paying attention to detail. Students then used the free MakeCode coding site to code the rovers to move forward, backward, left, and right. To extend this project, students built a remote control that held another Crazy Circuits bit board and Micro:bit. They programmed the remote to control the rover using a radio signal.\r\n\r\nStudents were very excited to build the rover and remote. They truly enjoyed the hands-on real world experience. This project is not only an excellent way to practice following instructions, but it also is an excellent way to introduce programming in a fun and engaging way.\r\n\r\nThe rover can also be programmed to follow lines, avoid obstacles, and be light and sound activated. With the pen holder attachment, the rover can be programmed to draw a picture. Students can even use their newly learned robotics skills to invent a unique game with the rover. This could include a sports game or even an escape room challenge. \r\n\r\nOther project extensions could include using servo motors to make their own creations, such as a moving art picture, a moving windmill for a cardboard putt putt game, a Lego Tilting Maze, a light following sunflower, or a plant self-watering system using a moisture sensor.\r\n\r\nWith creativity the possibilities are endless!","fullyFundedDate":1735712461256,"projectUrl":"project/microbit-powered-robotics/8941312/","projectTitle":"Micro:bit Powered Robotics","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Fields","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7426605"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_86380","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":223,"numTeachers":14,"percentFrplEligible":53,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":57,"percentIndigenous":6,"percentLatinx":16,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":71.4,"schoolId":86380,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Lakeview Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Lakeview Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oklahoma/norman-independent-school-district-29/lakeview-elementary-school/86380"}
