Our Battle of the Books program this year was a great success. We had twelve participants in grades three through five. This program got kiddos excited about reading, supported comprehension, and allowed students to enjoy some friendly competition. \r\n\r\nWe met weekly for book club. During our book club meetings, students read, discussed the novels, and practiced trivia questions about the books. For our final competition, we had two teams of six kiddos each. The teams earned points by answering questions about the texts they read. This program helped students develop a love for reading and enjoy time with other book lovers. This position was brand new and we needed a complete overhaul of the near-empty space. The result is wonderful and the response from staff and students has been fantastic. \r\n\r\nStudents are now able to enjoy a relaxing and engaging, sensory-friendly space that is colorful and inviting and provides them a space to breathe and discuss difficult topics. We are now able to use this room for sensory breaks, individual counseling, student support, parent meetings, and small group SEL lessons. I have been told by several students that this space is their favorite room in the building.\r\n\r\nI am excited to continue to grow this space as services expand and flourish in the coming school year.
