I integrate literacy, math, science, etc into each one of my lessons.\r\n\r\nMany of these \"games\" I have created require paper and small parts and therefore I needed a place to store them. There was a time when I thought \"I know I have this, but where did I put it?\" or \"where did all of the pieces go?\". These files and boxes and bags may seem underwhelming, but now I know where everything is and I can grab it at a moments notice if a lesson goes a different way than I planned as they often do!\r\n\r\nFor example, we were talking about the bones of the body and a student asked where a particular bone was located. My students have embraced them whole-heartedly and they are already flying off the shelves and almost always checked out. Students love coming to the library to choose books that they want to read, and having the books they want is crucial to keeping them engaged and fueling their love of reading.\r\nOne unfortunate side affect of the high-stakes testing in public schools is that often student read short passages and then must answer comprehension questions about what they have just read. These practices are great for improving reading comprehension, but frequently dampen the enjoyment of the act of reading. Children usually begin elementary school loving books and loving being read to. As they learn to read they are frequently super excited about their new skills. As they turn the corner from learning to read to reading to learn sometimes that joy can fizzle out if we don't keep that fire of excitement going with fun exciting books to read. That is where this donation comes in. The library is one of the few places that students get free choice and total autonomy of what they want to read. And because they talk to each other they want to read the really good books their their friend just read. Have these extra copies of popular titles is helping keep many more of our children excited about their reading choices and enjoying what they are reading.
