Thanks to you, we received a full classroom set of brand new scientific calculators, and they are already transforming how my students approach complex mathematical concepts. As we began this year, students have been able to dive deep into solving multi-step equations with distribution and rational coefficients, and the calculators have allowed students to work on the concept, rather than get stuck with the operations. \r\nBefore, students often spent valuavle class time struggling with multi-digit multiplication or long division. Now the calculators have become a powerful too for conceptual understanding. Calculators have also leveled the playing field for students. They ensure that a student's skill in basic arithmetic does not prevent them from accessing and mastering rigorous 8th grade math curriculum. \r\nHaving a full set of calculators has given my students independence as well. Everyone has access to new, functioning calculator when they walk in to class. As we get deeper into 8th grade math curriculum, having access to calculators that allow us to easily use the exponent function or square roots will be crucial. Most importantly, having a class set of the same calculator allows me to teach most effectively. Instead of having to show each student where to find key functions on their calculators, sicne each student has the same one, we only have to show this once.","fullyFundedDate":1743441637010,"projectUrl":"project/help-math-teacher-get-a-classroom-set-of/9169775/","projectTitle":"Help Math Teacher Get a Classroom Set of Calculators","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ravenelle","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9968415"},{"teacherId":2727973,"projectId":9139485,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your incredible support on our recent classroom project. The students were tasked with creating their own countries, complete with different landforms. They did a fantastic job, and it was great to see them confidently present their work to parents, community partners, and other teachers. They really loved the creative process, from outlining with the Sharpies to even plotting the natural disasters their countries encountered!\r\n\r\nThe flour, cornstarch, and other materials were perfect for our planet and landform creations. This was, and will continue to be, an incredible project. While students were learning about renewable energy and global pollutants in their core classes, my 8th graders were tinkering away to try and build a turbine that could generate as much voltage as possible. Students started on blade designs, testing RPM's generated from a large shop fan. Once they reached an optimal level, they went to work on the structure. First, they constructed the base, then the tower, and finally the turbine generator and pulley system. We had a school-wide competition for voltage and aesthetics. Because of your support, my classroom library now reflects the incredible diversity of my students, and the change has been nothing short of amazing. When I unpacked the new books, my students practically swarmed the shelves, pulling out titles that caught their eye. One student, who is usually pretty quiet, held up a book and said, \"Hey the character in this book is Middle Eastern!!\" That moment alone was worth everything.\r\n\r\nSince then, reading time in my class has completely shifted. Students are genuinely excited to pick up a book, and our discussions have gotten deeper and more meaningful. We've talked about big themes—immigration, resilience, friendship, and social justice—all sparked by these stories. One student, who used to say they didn't like reading, hasn't put down a graphic novel from our new collection. They even started sketching their own characters and stories during free time, which has been so exciting to see.\r\n\r\nThese books have also helped me connect with students who needed it most. Kids who struggled to find their place in the classroom are finding it in these stories, whether they're laughing along with a funny protagonist or relating to a character's challenges.
