After the initial argument about who would get to open the box, the class came around the table and we opened the box! \r\n\r\n I was thrilled to discover the package full of books for my students to read! The students had mixed feelings, eager for the new package and some reluctance when they realized it would amount to reading and homework. Nonetheless, learning about Abraham Lincoln has been an incredible experience for us all! Beyond having his face on the penny, Abraham Lincoln persevered through an incredibly turbulent time in the history of the United States!\r\n\r\n Ironically, as I write this letter, Minnesota is passing through a difficult time. Thousands of ICE agents have flooded our state causing my students and our immigrant community to feel fearful and unsafe. It has been a wonderful school year! I am really going to miss the unique bond each class has made in our time together.\r\n\r\nThis Donors Choose project was full of fun goodies such as a \"thumbs up stamp\", a smiley face stamp, waterproof water bottle stickers, flair pens and mechanical pencils. But I think it was the Karaoke Microphone that was the top hit for my students! While I thought they might like to have a microphone for class, I had no idea how much students would truly enjoy using the microphone! \r\n\r\nStudents of all grade levels have appreciated the opportunity to work on Diamond Dot Art stickers / magnets. A few students asked to stay after school to complete some as they wanted to gift their work of art to their mom for Mother's Day!\r\n\r\nI hope that each donor who contributed towards this wonderful project would find time to appreciate the little things. We know that reading will build vocabulary, fluency and improve our students' writing skills! We tell our students that books can act as windows or mirrors.\r\n\r\nWhen a book is a \"window\" it allows readers to see into the life and experience of someone different from ourselves. When a book acts as a \"mirror\" we see our own self reflected in the character we are reading about.\r\n\r\nThe book, Other Words for Home, is about a young girl, named Jude who arrives to The United States of America from Syria. She arrives with her mom and lives at her aunt's house, while her older brother and father stay behind to defend the homeland.\r\n\r\nThe book addresses the complexity of missing home while adjusting and finding home in a new country. \r\n\r\nMy EL students come from many diverse backgrounds! From Ukraine, El Salvador, Venezuela, Syria and many other countries! I know that as we delve into the book during term 4, students will be able to make personal connections with the challenges the main character Jude faces. It is my hope that we can use the book as a discussion point to cover the topics of bravery, courage, resilience, and home. \r\n\r\nAlso included in the Donors Choose package, were reward stickers and a few chess games! The classic game of Chess has provided a way for students who don't yet share a common language to connect with one another. The stickers are fun, colorful, unique, and each one different from the other! Seeing students choose something as simple as a sticker, enables us to learn about each other's interests.\r\n\r\nThanks again, for your investment into my classroom and for equipping me to bring a fun and engaging book into their hands!","fullyFundedDate":1733249777649,"projectUrl":"project/overcoming-challenges-through-bravery-a/8957579/","projectTitle":"Overcoming Challenges Through Bravery and Courage!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Garcia","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9151729_orig.jpg?crop=786,786,x90,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1691030127377","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9151729"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_74542","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":854,"numTeachers":39,"percentFrplEligible":30,"percentAsian":6,"percentBlack":7,"percentWhite":63,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":14,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"21.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":90.6,"schoolId":74542,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Kenwood Trail Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Kenwood Trail Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/minnesota/lakeville-independent-school-district-194/kenwood-trail-middle-school/74542"}
