It's been amazing! I wanted to encourage students to think and become aware of metacognition in a really fun way. I thought the best way to do that was via play. Oh, how it's worked!\r\n\r\nI made the games a reward for reading. When children read for a specified period of time, they got to come to the game room. They have played and thought and improved their thinking skills while having loads of fun. We obtained checkers, Uno games, rubric's cubes, puzzles, card games, pick up sticks and a beautiful rug for them to sit comfortably on. Everything we purchased required thinking to play the games and win. Everything required being strategic. It's a huge hit!\r\n\r\nOur students were so surprised when they first heard the announcements and actually got to visit the game room. Sometimes they came alone, other times they came with friends that earned enough reading minutes. This has been such a big hit at our school that teachers are volunteering their \"free\" time to play with students that came alone.\r\n\r\nOur next step? I plan to implement tournaments! I'm really excited about the checker tournaments but I think they'll all be a big hit.","fullyFundedDate":1734536809507,"projectUrl":"project/play-to-think-becoming-metacognitive/8956744/","projectTitle":"Play to Think - Becoming Metacognitive","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Cooper","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/599563"},{"teacherId":599563,"projectId":8945214,"letterContent":"This has been amazing. This project started because my kindergarten teacher wanted to do a research project with her students about \"exercise\". Lo and behold, when she came to me, the school librarian, with her topic of interest, I found I had no books written on a level her students could read or comprehend about exercise. I was flabbergasted, dismayed and disappointed in my school's collection. \r\nMy next step, of course, was to find titles that would support kindergartners researching \"exercise\".\r\nBecause of your donation, we now have books about: yoga, how exercise impacts mind set, and books modeling exercise. \r\nThough the intent was to provide research material for this kindergarten class, of course our whole school will be impacted because the titles were added to the school's collection. So when kindergarten students are not researching, these titles will be available to other students in the school.\r\nSo as I walk by the kindergarten classroom, it is the norm now to see youngsters practicing what they read from their new books. The teacher is awesome because this is totally okay with her. Students have time to practice what they've learned.","fullyFundedDate":1733191827565,"projectUrl":"project/kindergartners-research-exercise-move/8945214/","projectTitle":"Kindergartners Research Exercise - Move, Move, Move!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Cooper","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/599563"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_6784","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":199,"numTeachers":21,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":87,"percentWhite":8,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":1,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"9.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":59.4,"schoolId":6784,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Kelly Miller Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Kelly Miller Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/south-carolina/fairfield-county-school-district/kelly-miller-elementary-school/6784"}
