The art supplies have also been exciting and give students a fun way to be creative.\r\n\r\nWhen the supplies arrived, the students were so happy. Their faces lit up as we opened the boxes together. Their learning activity was to research, imagine, plan, create, build, test, and improve a game made out of recycled materials (with the exception of paint, construction paper, velcro, magnets and clips). The final communication portion of this STEM project was to present their game in a carnival for all of the students of our school. There were some students who used the magnets to create a fishing game. During the carnival display of all the games, many of the younger students raved about the fishing game! The creativity of the 5th grade students and the joy of all the younger students who played the games was all because of your generous donations! This project was so successful because of you. Because of your generosity, our classroom now has a reading area filled with a wide variety of books that truly welcome every reader. Students are drawn to the space because they can find stories that match their interests, identities, and moods—whether they are looking for something funny, adventurous, comforting, or familiar. Reading time in our classroom feels calm and inviting, with students settling into the space, exploring books at their own pace, and developing positive habits around reading.\r\n\r\nThe diversity of our new books has been especially meaningful. We now have texts that reflect different cultures, family structures, and experiences, allowing students to see themselves in the stories they read. Other books introduce them to new perspectives and worlds, helping them feel curious and open-minded. Instead of feeling overwhelmed or unsure about choosing a book, students feel welcomed and confident knowing there is something on the shelf just for them.\r\n\r\nI have already noticed students who are especially excited about the new books. Some students who were previously hesitant now enjoy browsing the shelves and revisiting favorite stories, while others love sharing book recommendations with classmates. A few students find comfort in reading quietly during transitions, and others are eager to explore new genres they had never tried before. Your support has helped create a warm, inclusive environment where every child feels invited to be a reader, and for that, I am deeply grateful. They immediately noticed how the table made our classroom feel more organized and special. Many students asked when it would be their turn to sit at the horseshoe table, and they were excited to hear music and lessons more clearly through the speaker. Their enthusiasm made the first day using the materials extra memorable.\r\n\r\nOur next steps include using the horseshoe table for focused reading comprehension groups as we begin a new unit on identifying themes and main ideas. Reading The One and Only Ivan together has opened the door to so many meaningful lessons, both academic and personal. Through this text, students are learning to identify figurative language, explore vocabulary in context, and analyze theme and character development. We've had powerful discussions about the treatment of animals, the importance of friendship, and standing up for what's right. The poetic prose structure of the book has also introduced students to a unique storytelling style that's helping them see how authors use language creatively to express emotion and build connection.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is a shared experience. We read together as a class, in small groups, and independently, using the novel as a springboard for conversation, writing, and deeper thinking. One student who usually struggles to stay focused during reading time now rushes to class, excited to read what happens next in Ivan's story. Another student, who rarely spoke up during discussions, has started sharing thoughtful insights about the characters' motivations and the story's message.
