Our students were so thrilled to see our store refilled! We were also able to open our store more once a week, as we were only able to open once a month! Our next steps are to continue building on the real-world skills that the Mālama Store is helping to support. We are currently connecting this experience by incorporating goal setting, budgeting, and decision-making into our daily routines. Students are tracking their tickets, setting personal goals for items they want to earn, and reflecting on their choices after each visit. Our Malama Store is also part of our PBIS school wide system. \r\n\r\nWe are also beginning to tie this into math lessons, where students practice counting, comparing values, and understanding the concept of saving versus spending. In addition, we are integrating social-emotional learning by encouraging patience, responsibility, and thoughtful decision-making.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we hope to expand the store experience by allowing students to take on leadership roles, such as helping to organize items, manage \"sales,\" and support their peers. We have refilled our Malama Store, and now it's open once a week for every grade level to come and shop. Previously, we were only able to open the store once a month, so this has been a wonderful change that keeps students consistently motivated and engaged.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the new materials, their excitement was immediate. They were thrilled to see new items available and eagerly started planning how to spend—or save—their tickets. It's been especially rewarding to watch them practice patience and goal-setting as they work toward earning enough for items they really want.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we plan to continue using the Malama Store as part of our school wide PBIS system. Students will keep earning tickets through demonstrating kindness, responsibility, and effort in their schoolwork. We're also encouraging them to reflect on their choices—whether to spend right away or save for something bigger—so they can continue building important life skills like decision-making and financial awareness.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping us create a system that not only rewards students but also teaches them valuable lessons they'll carry with them beyond the classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1771698627278,"projectUrl":"project/help-to-refill-the-malama-store/10108400/","projectTitle":"Help to Refill the Malama Store","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kuewa","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8978712"},{"teacherId":9654680,"projectId":10104278,"letterContent":"Math is moving from a list of names to a physical map! With our new number line whiteboards, students are trading 'Counting All' for the much more efficient 'Counting On' strategy. We love seeing those 'lightbulb moments' happen in real-time!\r\n\r\nThe addition of organized material bins has significantly streamlined our daily transitions. By providing a dedicated, accessible home for each tool, students can independently 'grab and go' without losing instructional momentum. This organization reduces the cognitive load—instead of spending mental energy on finding supplies, students can immediately channel their focus into the mathematical task at hand. The final communication portion of this STEM project was to present their game in a carnival for all of the students of our school. There were some students who used the magnets to create a fishing game. During the carnival display of all the games, many of the younger students raved about the fishing game! The creativity of the 5th grade students and the joy of all the younger students who played the games was all because of your generous donations! This project was so successful because of you. Reading time in our classroom feels calm and inviting, with students settling into the space, exploring books at their own pace, and developing positive habits around reading.\r\n\r\nThe diversity of our new books has been especially meaningful. We now have texts that reflect different cultures, family structures, and experiences, allowing students to see themselves in the stories they read. Other books introduce them to new perspectives and worlds, helping them feel curious and open-minded. Instead of feeling overwhelmed or unsure about choosing a book, students feel welcomed and confident knowing there is something on the shelf just for them.\r\n\r\nI have already noticed students who are especially excited about the new books. Some students who were previously hesitant now enjoy browsing the shelves and revisiting favorite stories, while others love sharing book recommendations with classmates.
