Our next steps are to continue building on the real-world skills that the Mālama Store is helping to support. We are currently connecting this experience by incorporating goal setting, budgeting, and decision-making into our daily routines. Students are tracking their tickets, setting personal goals for items they want to earn, and reflecting on their choices after each visit. Our Malama Store is also part of our PBIS school wide system. \r\n\r\nWe are also beginning to tie this into math lessons, where students practice counting, comparing values, and understanding the concept of saving versus spending. In addition, we are integrating social-emotional learning by encouraging patience, responsibility, and thoughtful decision-making.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we hope to expand the store experience by allowing students to take on leadership roles, such as helping to organize items, manage \"sales,\" and support their peers. They were thrilled to see new items available and eagerly started planning how to spend—or save—their tickets. The students have used the magnets and velcro in one of their projects already! The 5th grade students had a project to create a homemade \"cardboard arcade\". Their learning activity was to research, imagine, plan, create, build, test, and improve a game made out of recycled materials (with the exception of paint, construction paper, velcro, magnets and clips). The final communication portion of this STEM project was to present their game in a carnival for all of the students of our school. There were some students who used the magnets to create a fishing game. During the carnival display of all the games, many of the younger students raved about the fishing game! The creativity of the 5th grade students and the joy of all the younger students who played the games was all because of your generous donations! This project was so successful because of you.
