The timer has also been incredibly helpful in keeping our activities organized and helping students to manage their time more effectively.\r\n\r\nWhen my students received the materials, they were so happy! For safety reasons, adults operated the heat press equipment, ensuring the process was completed carefully and successfully.\r\n\r\nLike many meaningful classroom projects, we encountered a few unexpected challenges along the way. The t-shirts we initially ordered were not fully compatible with our printing process, and shifting school schedules—due to testing and other events—required adjustments to our timeline.\r\n\r\nDespite these hurdles, we adapted our approach and were able to fully utilize the printing equipment and sublimation supplies to their fullest potential. By providing these resources—ranging from organizational tools to sensory supports and playground equipment—you haven't just filled a classroom with \"stuff\"; you've built a sanctuary where my students feel seen, supported, and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nTransformation through Organization and Comfort\r\nWe are using the magnetic file holders and wall hooks to create a sense of \"home\" and autonomy. In a busy classroom, clutter can lead to anxiety. Now, students walk in and independently hang their bags, knowing exactly where their work belongs.\r\n\r\nThe bean bags and fuzzy table feet covers have completely shifted the energy of our workspace. The bean bags have turned our \"Fish in a Tree\" reading corner into the most coveted spot in the room, while the fuzzy covers have silenced the constant scraping of chairs, creating a calm, focused environment that allows my sensitive learners to thrive.\r\n\r\nA Moment of Pure Joy\r\nI wish you could have seen their faces when the boxes arrived. When I pulled out the tetherball and bouncy balls, the room erupted in cheers. One student, who often struggles with social anxiety during recess, immediately grabbed a stress ball and said, \"It's like the classroom knows I get nervous.\"\r\n\r\nThe most magical moment, however, was seeing a student who usually has a hard time staying in his seat settle into a bean bag with a book. He looked up and whispered, \"I feel like a real author in this chair.\" For the first time all year, he finished an entire chapter without needing to get up once.\r\n\r\nWhat's Next: Building Our Best Selves\r\nOur next steps involve integrating these sensory and play resources into a \"Self-Regulation Station.\" We are currently working on a social-emotional lesson where students identify their \"internal weather.\" They are learning to recognize when they need a stress ball for focus or a few minutes on the tetherball to burn off frustrated energy.\r\n\r\nBy having these tools, my students are moving from being \"managed\" by a teacher to managing themselves. They are learning that they have the power to change their environment to suit their needs.\r\n\r\nYour contribution has given my students the message that their comfort and their play are just as important as their test scores. You've helped us build a classroom that doesn't just teach—it cares.","fullyFundedDate":1771624531293,"projectUrl":"project/tools-for-every-learner-pivoting-toward/10106066/","projectTitle":"Tools for Every Learner: Pivoting Towards Success","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Sokei-Lutz","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4563492_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1506623849430","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4563492"},{"teacherId":4563492,"projectId":10004945,"letterContent":"It is with my deepest gratitude for your generous donation of Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt to our classroom library. This book has become a cornerstone of our daily discussions, and its impact on my students' perspective toward learning and toward one another has been nothing short of transformative.\r\n\r\nLessons and Skills Gained\r\nThe introduction of this text has brought several vital lessons into our classroom that go far beyond standard literacy skills:\r\n\r\nThe Power of \"Yet\": My students have embraced Ally Nickerson's journey, learning that \"I can't do this\" should always be followed by \"yet.\" It has sparked a culture of growth mindset.\r\n\r\nCelebrating Neurodiversity: This book provided a beautiful framework for discussing how different brains process information. Students are learning to see dyslexia and other learning differences not as \"broken\" traits, but as unique ways of seeing the world.\r\n\r\nEmpathy and Advocacy: We have practiced the skill of looking beneath the surface of someone's behavior. The students are now more likely to ask, \"Is there something hard going on?\" rather than making a quick judgment.\r\n\r\nReading in Our Classroom\r\nBecause of your gift, reading in our classroom has become a more dynamic and inclusive experience. We often engage in:\r\n\r\nInteractive Read-Alouds: We pause to analyze Ally's \"mind movies,\" which has helped my visual learners connect more deeply with the prose.\r\n\r\nLiterature Circles: Students meet in small groups to debate the motivations of characters like Mr. Daniels or Shay, using evidence from the text to support their claims.\r\n\r\nSafe-Space Reflection: We use the book as a springboard for \"Identity Journals,\" where students write about their own hidden \"sketchbook of dreams.\"\r\n\r\nStudent Impact\r\nWhile the whole class is engaged, there are a few students who have been particularly moved by this story. One student, who has often struggled with reading confidence, told me privately, \"I think I have a 'silver dollar' brain like Ally.\" Seeing themselves reflected in a protagonist has given these students a renewed sense of belonging and the courage to participate more vocally in class.\r\n\r\nAnother group of students has taken the \"chess\" metaphor from the book to heart, starting a small chess club during recess to practice the strategic thinking Ally uses to find her strengths.\r\n\r\nThank you for providing the \"key\" that helped unlock so much potential in my students.
