The students were absolutely overjoyed when they first saw the tank set up—there were gasps, cheers, and even a few quiet whispers of, \"We have real pets in our room!\" They immediately began brainstorming names, designing \"Hermit Crab Observation Journals,\" and taking turns caring for our new class pets.\r\n\r\nWe've been using the hermit crabs as a hands-on connection to our science and literacy lessons. During our Living Things unit, students observed how the crabs move, eat, and change shells, then recorded their observations in complete sentences. In math, they measured the shells and graphed their sizes. In writing, they created short stories from the crabs' point of view—one of our favorites was titled The Great Shell Swap!\r\n\r\nThese hermit crabs have given my students a chance to practice responsibility, empathy, and scientific thinking in a fun, authentic way. They've even inspired quieter students to share their ideas during discussion time.\r\n\r\nNext, we'll be learning about habitats and ecosystems, exploring how to keep our classroom habitat healthy and comparing it to the crabs' natural environment. Your generosity made this living classroom experience possible, and my students are thriving because of it.
