They also frequently do not engage in other activities, again, because of tech. When we get back to the basics with some hard copies of books and other resources in the hands of kids in the classroom, good things usually start to happen. This was the case here.\r\n\r\nThe books that we were able to use as a result of your donations are beautiful books with very intricate illustrations. The students find themselves captivated with this in a way that they don't always encounter in their daily, screen-ridden lives. They were able to delve deeper into the text since their attention was held by the level of detail in the illustrations.\r\n\r\nThe logic puzzles also helped the students push themselves mentally to places they don't often get to. The first step to supporting students, is making them feel comfortable and welcome. \r\n\r\nI've also had the opportunity to update our bulletin board recently, using the new Cricut. The new colorful bulletin is inspiring and encouraging, and I can't wait to create more bulletins as the school year goes on. I open up my classroom and allow my students to let it be their \"home away from home\", if they want it to. The donation of supplies you contributed to makes my classroom a safe space.\r\n\r\nBecause of how fast-paced we go when learning content, I often give my students fun breaks or \"free-time.\" We do that by playing Blooket trivia games, where X amount of winners get a prize, which is a snack; or \"free-time\" consists of \"forcing\" them to read a book, which is now updated with books that are right up their alley. Our little library is is close to the ground and now that there are more seat cushions for them, they all get to be with their friends, and it warms my heart knowing that I get to help give them this space. The students are using the hydraulics kits to act as the 'muscles' for cardboard robotic arms. The specific moment that stands out was when a group finally connected their fluid lines to the cardboard frame. They used the cordless drill to create precise pivot points (something we couldn't do with scissors!) and the self-healing mats to safely slice their structural pieces. Seeing the arm actually move and pick up a crumpled piece of paper for the first time drew a round of applause from the whole room. We are finally building machines that work, rather than just models that look like machines.\r\nThe reaction was immediate excitement, especially regarding the cordless drill. When I unboxed it, I heard several students whisper, 'Wait, we get to use power tools?' It immediately shifted the tone of the classroom from a regular school day to a professional engineering environment. They were also fascinated by the tubing and syringes in the hydraulics kit, immediately trying to figure out how they connected. They felt trusted and respected to be given access to 'grown-up' equipment.\r\nThe next step is for students to 'market' their inventions. They will be filming short commercials demonstrating how their hydraulic machines work. They will have to explain the science behind the fluid power and demonstrate the build quality. Because they used the drill to make sturdy connections, their projects are durable enough to be demonstrated over and over again without falling apart. We are excited to invite school leaders and the community in to try operating the machines!\"","fullyFundedDate":1759189272161,"projectUrl":"project/make-it-move-an-introduction-to-hydrau/9561090/","projectTitle":"Make It Move - an Introduction to Hydraulics","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Kamiya","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9481884"},{"teacherId":3392344,"projectId":9773534,"letterContent":"Thank you for the generous donations of fans and power strips. Although their time with all the things I was gifted was short, or they never really got to use certain things, my students from last year were so thrilled that I got my list fully funded...especially the girls! In one of the the pictures on the slides deck, you can see a few of my girl students enjoying their own couch because, yup, the boys infiltrated the other couch I had personally bought with my own money. So, the couch that was on my project list, officially became the \"GIRL'S COUCH\", with the exception of one boy student who put the couch together. \r\nWith the completion of this project, I also got to elevate my supplies area by providing a wider variety of colored pencil options and fine line markers, as my existing broad line markers were slowly giving out; for some of those broad line markers, there were simply not enough for an entire class to use–should they had needed it. The addition of the fine line markers boasted my quantity of markers to make sure that I have enough to make a class set! Don't even get me started on the box of snacks we got...such a great way to keep my students motivated and focused! It also was a great way to get through the last couple of weeks of school without it getting to the point of dreariness. I even got a Swiffer to keep my floors as clean as it was the day it got stripped and waxed, which I take a lot of pride in because when I made the decision to go shoeless in my classroom, I didn't know my room was going to be the \"cleanest room\" that one of my tech guys has ever seen on campus. And the fact that he told me this at the end of the year was one of my biggest achievements!\r\nOverall, the full funding of this project meant a lot for my students and I because I usually am one person to buy whatever things necessary for my classroom to benefit my students. However, when the opportunity arose to create a project through Donors Choose, I jumped at it. I never thought it would have gotten contributed to, let alone fully funded within a couple of months of me creating the project—this definitely saved me the several hundreds of dollars. They were immediately curious and eager to try everything out. One student exclaimed, \"Wait, these are for us?\" — a reminder of how meaningful it is when they feel seen and supported. The calculators quickly became a favorite tool, especially during our recent unit on linear equations and systems of equations. Instead of getting stuck on the arithmetic, students were able to focus on analyzing patterns, interpreting slope and y-intercepts, and checking their work with confidence. It has made our lessons more interactive and helped students build a deeper understanding of algebraic thinking.\r\n\r\nThe lounge chairs and gym mats have completely transformed the way we do math in our room. Students now have the option to spread out comfortably during group projects, independent practice, or review stations. During one particularly memorable lesson, I organized a \"Math Escape Room\" where students rotated through stations — solving algebra puzzles, graphing, and decoding clues — all while lounging on the mats or chairs. Their energy, collaboration, and engagement levels were through the roof. By creating this flexible space, students not only stayed more focused but also felt more at ease, which made it easier for them to persevere through tough problems.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, my classroom now feels like a place where students want to be — a space that supports both their academic growth and emotional well-being. We are currently preparing for our end-of-year algebra projects, where students will apply what they've learned to real-world scenarios.
