They couldn't wait to grab a marker and get to work—there was an immediate buzz of excitement in the room. Math can sometimes feel intimidating when worked out individually on paper, but seeing giant, empty whiteboards ready for their ideas instantly turned math time into something they genuinely look forward to.\r\n\r\nWe use these vertical whiteboards frequently to tackle complex, multi-step problem-solving tasks. Recently, during a challenging lesson on proportional reasoning and word problems, I assigned each small group a different real-world scenario to map out. Instead of sitting quietly at their desks, students were standing shoulder-to-shoulder, actively debating strategies, sketching out models, and erasing and revising their thinking in real time. One of my favorite moments was watching a group that normally struggles with confidence: as they worked standing up, one student picked up the marker to sketch a diagram while another called out steps, and together they solved a problem they previously thought was too hard.
