Because of you, my students were able to experience early American history in a way that was engaging, accessible, and meaningful.\r\n\r\nWith Blood on the River: Jamestown 1607 and A Break with Charity, students explored two pivotal moments in American history—the founding of Jamestown and the Salem Witch Trials—through the eyes of young narrators they could relate to. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by unfamiliar language and dense primary texts, students were able to build historical understanding through clear, compelling storytelling. \r\n\r\nBecause these books were written at an appropriate reading level, my struggling readers were able to access the content with confidence. This made a tremendous difference compared to our previous study of these topics. Students who often hesitate to participate became more willing to read, discuss, and share their ideas. Their reading stamina improved, and they were better able to make connections, ask questions, and engage in thoughtful conversations.\r\n\r\nThese texts also helped strengthen essential literacy skills. Students expanded their vocabulary, practiced comprehension strategies, and developed the ability to analyze characters and historical events. Equipped with the right tools, students were empowered to participate in meaningful, hands on work in their community.\r\nThroughout this experience, students developed a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship as they saw firsthand how everyday waste impacts wildlife, waterways, and public spaces.
