The communication cubbies have helped our classroom feel more organized and calm by giving students a clear, consistent place to turn in and receive work. The rolling cart is used to safely and easily transport our library books to and from the school library, which has made library day smoother and more efficient and helps ensure books stay organized and cared for. The bean bags have transformed our reading time by creating a cozy, welcoming space where students can relax and truly enjoy their books.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, they were thrilled and excited. They were especially excited to try out the bean bags during independent reading and immediately made connections between comfort and focus! Students shared that reading feels more enjoyable, and I've noticed increased engagement! Especially from students who previously struggled to stay focused during reading time.\r\n\r\nNext, my students will continue building reading stamina, participating in small-group reading lessons, and using the improved organization in our classroom to take greater ownership of their learning. Because of Panda Cares' generosity, our classroom runs more smoothly and supports students both academically and emotionally. Thank you for giving my third graders resources that make a real difference in their daily learning experiences. Easier access & less frustration\r\nTouch screens reduce the need for fine-motor skills like using a mouse or keyboard. Students can tap, drag, or swipe, which feels more natural and lowers frustration—especially for younger students or those with motor challenges.\r\n\r\n2. Supports visual learning\r\nMany students with autism are strong visual learners. Touch screens allow them to:\r\n\t•\tSee and interact with pictures, symbols, and videos\r\n\t•\tUse visual schedules and timers\r\n\t•\tFollow step-by-step instructions more easily\r\n\r\n3. Improves communication\r\nTouch-screen devices work well with AAC and speech-support apps. Students can:\r\n\t•\tSelect icons to express needs and feelings\r\n\t•\tBuild sentences visually\r\n\t•\tCommunicate more independently and confidently\r\n\r\n4. Increases engagement and motivation\r\nInteractive apps (reading, math, social skills, self-regulation tools) keep students interested longer. The immediate response from touching the screen helps sustain attention and participation.\r\n\r\n5. Supports independence\r\nStudents can:\r\n\t•\tNavigate learning apps on their own\r\n\t•\tComplete assignments digitally\r\n\t•\tUse built-in tools like text-to-speech, speech-to-text, and visual cues\r\nThis builds confidence and reduces reliance on adult prompts.\r\n\r\n6. Helps with self-regulation\r\nTouch-screen laptops can include:\r\n\t•\tCalm-down apps\r\n\t•\tVisual timers\r\n\t•\tBreak schedules\r\nThese tools help students recognize emotions and manage transitions more smoothly.\r\n\r\nIn short:\r\nA touch-screen laptop is not just a device—it's a learning, communication, and regulation support tool that helps students with autism access the curriculum, express themselves, and succeed more independently.\r\n\r\nThank you donors❤️","fullyFundedDate":1767221971798,"projectUrl":"project/tech-tools-for-bright-futures/9667060/","projectTitle":"Tech Tools for Bright Futures","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Galan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10090231_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1769194263653","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10090231"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_79755","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":198,"numTeachers":9,"percentFrplEligible":54,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":82,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":11,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"22.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":66.7,"schoolId":79755,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Johnstonville Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Johnstonville Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/johnstonville-elementary-school-district/johnstonville-elementary-school/79755"}
