Being able to place this novel into the hands of every student has made a powerful difference in our reading community. This book invites students to explore themes of resilience, courage, perspective, and the ways history shapes identity. As we read, students are learning to identify narrative structure, analyze character motivations, make text-to-world connections, and reflect on how different points of view influence how a story is experienced and understood. Having enough copies for everyone has allowed us to move through the novel together, pause for discussion and reflection, and give students the time and space to respond to difficult moments thoughtfully and respectfully.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and deeply collaborative. Students annotate key passages, write response reflections, and participate in structured discussions where they learn to listen to one another, ask questions, and support their ideas with evidence from the text. This book in particular has opened the door for powerful conversations about empathy, grief, bravery, and how communities respond in moments of crisis. Some students have shared family stories or personal reflections connected to the events surrounding 9/11, while others are learning about this history for the first time. Because every student has their own copy, no one is left waiting or trying to remember details; they can return to important paragraphs, mark questions, and build understanding each day.\r\n\r\nCertain students who don't typically see themselves as \"strong readers\" have become some of our deepest thinkers during this unit. The intensity of the narrative and the emotional stakes have kept engagement high. One student said, \"This book makes me feel like I'm there, and it makes me think about how people help each other.\" Your generosity didn't just provide books. It created a shared learning experience, strengthened reading confidence, and opened space for meaningful discussion and emotional growth in our classroom. Having a copy in every student's hands has brought our reading block to life. This novel has allowed us to explore important literacy skills such as making predictions, analyzing character motivations, identifying themes, and using contextual clues to understand unfamiliar vocabulary. We've also been practicing close reading strategies as students annotate key passages, circle powerful phrases, and mark moments of rising tension. The mystery and adventure within the story naturally invite curiosity, which has led to thoughtful discussions and exciting \"lightbulb\" moments during class.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active, collaborative, and joyful. The suspense in this book has kept engagement incredibly high, and students are eager to share theories about the city, the blackouts, and what might lie beyond Ember's walls. Many students who can sometimes feel overwhelmed by longer texts are finding success with this novel, step by step. One student told me, \"I can actually see the story in my head. It feels like I'm there,\" which is such a win for confidence and comprehension.\r\n\r\nSome students, especially those who love problem-solving or science, have connected deeply with the survival elements and the puzzle-like clues throughout the story. It has sparked curiosity, sparked creativity, and even led to conversations about energy, sustainability, and what makes a community thrive. Your support didn't just place books into our classroom. Having enough books for each student to hold in their hands has transformed the way we approach reading this year. Rather than reading in small portions or sharing limited copies, my students have been able to annotate, discuss, reread, and truly live inside the story. Through this novel, we are exploring important themes such as courage, resilience in the face of hardship, migration stories, family separation, and empathy for experiences outside our own. Students are practicing close reading skills, building vocabulary in both English and Spanish, and engaging in thoughtful conversations about identity and community.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and collaborative. Students meet in small groups to discuss big questions, annotate key passages, and sometimes share personal connections when they feel comfortable. It has been powerful to see them support one another, challenge each other's ideas respectfully, and grow into deeper, more reflective readers. For many of my students, this is the first time they've seen a story reflect experiences that look like their families', their journeys, or people they know. That connection matters.\r\n\r\nI have seen certain students in particular blossom during this unit. Students who are usually hesitant to participate during whole-group lessons are raising their hands to share insights, especially when discussing the characters' emotions and decisions. One student told me, \"This book feels real. It makes me want to read more.\" That enthusiasm is exactly what teachers hope to see. Your generosity didn't just provide books. It opened space for students to see themselves, to feel seen, and to become more confident thinkers, readers, and storytellers. The new materials have helped us create an organized, welcoming space where learning and creativity thrive.\r\n\r\nThe holders for our boomwhackers and scarves have made a huge difference, students can now easily access instruments and take responsibility for helping with setup and cleanup. No more scattered materials! My chorus students feel so special with their new binders and storage shelves. Having a dedicated space for their music and supplies gives them a sense of pride and ownership over \"their\" corner of the room.\r\n\r\nThe sticky tack and 3M hooks have brightened our once plain white walls with colorful, music-themed posters, turning our classroom into a vibrant space that inspires joy and creativity. The carpet spots are another game changer — every one of the 400–500 students I see each week now has a numbered spot, which keeps us organized and helps with smooth transitions and group activities.\r\n\r\nThe prize box items have been a huge hit! My students are working extra hard to earn stickers and demonstrate positive behavior for a chance to choose a special prize. And my new slideshow clicker has truly been a lifesaver, I can move around the room freely, keep lessons flowing, and add a touch of \"magic\" to presentations, especially for my younger learners.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, our classroom feels more efficient, engaging, and full of joy. Thanks to your donation, each of my students now has their very own whiteboard and eraser—and they could not be more thrilled. The moment they saw the neatly stacked, brand-new boards waiting for them, their faces lit up. One student exclaimed, \"We all get the same kind?!\" and the room buzzed with excitement as they proudly held up their new tools.\r\n\r\nWe've already put the whiteboards to great use. During math, students eagerly write and hold up their answers as we practice ordering numbers, comparing greater and less than, and solving addition and subtraction problems together. In phonics, we use them to stretch out sounds and spell words. It's been wonderful to see every student so engaged, confident, and ready to share their thinking. One of my favorite moments was when we worked on number ordering—students compared their boards side by side, cheering when they all got it right and helping each other when answers were different.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we'll continue using our boards daily to build spelling skills, solve math problems, and even brainstorm ideas during writing. Having equal-sized, personal boards has created a sense of fairness and belonging in our classroom—it truly feels like everyone is a part of the same team.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students tools that make learning fun, interactive, and full of joy. Students love seeing their thoughts displayed on the wall, which allows them to visualize their ideas and participate in group discussions. This has been especially powerful during story-building activities, where children can add their own sentences, suggest ideas for characters or settings, and collaborate with classmates. My students were thrilled when they realized they would get to design and build their own model airplanes. Working in small groups, they carefully constructed wings, tails, and engines, learning how each piece plays a role in making an airplane fly. Some experimented with changing wing shapes to see how it affected balance, while others proudly tested their creations across the room. Having these new clipboards made it easier for us to work around the room and on the carpet like completing our different assessments. Plus with the clipboards being black and plastic, students can't draw on them, which with my past clipboards was a big issue that took a lot of time to try to clean off or cover. \r\n\r\nIn addition to the clipboards, our new classroom incentives have been a huge hit.
