Because of these materials, interns now participate daily in authentic, hands-on instruction focused on independent living and workplace readiness skills. Students are actively learning how to safely store food, follow basic food safety guidelines, operate appliances appropriately, and maintain shared equipment through cleaning and routine care.\r\n\r\nThese experiences have allowed us to embed instruction in real-life contexts rather than simulated lessons. Interns now practice planning meals, bringing appropriate food from home, labeling items, managing time during breaks, and problem-solving when routines change. These skills directly support IEP goals related to independence, self-management, and functional life skills, while also reinforcing expectations they will encounter in employment settings.\r\n\r\nBecause of the donated equipment, we have been able to create a structured lunch and break routine that promotes responsibility, accountability, and peer cooperation. Students take pride in caring for the space, following posted procedures, and supporting one another in maintaining a clean and organized environment. These accomplishments may appear simple, but for our interns they represent significant growth toward independence and adult readiness.\r\n\r\nThis project has strengthened our ability to provide meaningful, skill-based instruction that prepares students for life beyond the classroom. The impact of this donation will continue to support student growth, confidence, and independence long into the future. Everyone, staff included, is excited about having a dryer. We found out that several of the students enjoy pushing and rotating buttons and listening to the dryer while it is on. The dryer serves as a fantastic job training tool and also teaches when it is appropriate to turn on certain appliances. It has been thrilling to see the transformation in those students.\r\nOur long-term goal is to run a towel washing and drying service once a week to hone these skills and, in turn, equip our students with much-needed job skills for their visual resumes. Many people underestimate our students' ability to learn job skills, so they do not expect them to hold a job upon graduation. While we do have a few who may not be able to hold a job, the training they are receiving will, at the very least, enable them to help with laundry at home. \r\nThank you again for being a part of helping our students learn these important skills.","fullyFundedDate":1733266487423,"projectUrl":"project/eagles-soar-higher-mastering-new-job-sk/8699030/","projectTitle":"Eagles Soar Higher: Mastering New Job Skills in Laundry!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Burks","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7923293_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1720618970360","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/c-burks"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_13682","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":41,"numTeachers":7,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":34,"percentWhite":41,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":21,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":"5.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":45.1,"schoolId":13682,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Jackson County Exceptional School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Jackson County Exceptional School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/mississippi/pascagoula-gautier-school-district/jackson-co-exceptional-school/13682"}
