My name is Scott Sweeney and I am the Community Health Outreach Worker of Independence High School on 7th Avenue working with our Wellness Coordinator, Dre Collaço. We are an alternative high school in San Francisco Unified School District and we serve a diverse group of students from across the city. Many of our students come to us after less than successful experiences at comprehensive high schools- many have mental health needs, learning challenges or difficult family situations. We work hard to create a nurturing and safe environment that meets the needs of all of our learners.\r\n Hunger within the school system is a prominent issue, and especially for our particular school with higher levels of anxieties and mental health needs it is important to have a safe space alternative to the classic lunchroom set up.
