My students had other plans. Class stopped instantly. In the middle of a lesson, they turned to each other with this spark in their eyes, and one said, \"Can we build it? We can do it.\"\r\n\r\nWhat happened next felt like a teacher's dream. These middle schoolers, who do not always agree on anything, formed their own teams, assigned roles, read directions together, and talked each other through every step. They problem-solved mismatched screws, figured out how to stabilize the legs, and held pieces steady for classmates they do not always work with. I watched them become a community right in front of me.\r\n\r\nWhen the first chair clicked into place, they actually cheered. They did not wait for permission to sit. They sank right into it like it belonged to them. In that moment, it did. One student whispered, \"This feels like a real library.\" Another asked, \"Can we read now? Like here?\"\r\n\r\nThe rug, the lights, the chairs. They changed the room, yes. More importantly, they changed how my students saw themselves in the space. Suddenly our reading corner was not just furniture. It was something they built. Something they took ownership of. Something they are proud of.\r\n\r\nSince that day, more students volunteer to read aloud. More students stay after class to finish a page. More students ask, \"Can I go to the cozy corner today?\" The environment you helped create did not just make reading comfortable. It made it communal, joyful, and theirs.\r\n\r\nYou did not just fund furniture.\r\nYou helped my students build a space and a confidence they did not know they could have.","fullyFundedDate":1759265983224,"projectUrl":"project/cozy-corners-bright-minds-creating-a-s/9693335/","projectTitle":"Cozy Corners, Bright Minds: Creating a Student-Centered Reading Lounge","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Rhein","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4004691_orig.png?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756961428583","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrsrhein"},{"teacherId":7761402,"projectId":9707474,"letterContent":"Our new Study Café has become a favorite spot during our school's open FLEX period, giving students a calm, flexible space to work, read, or catch up on assignments. The Study Café has quickly turned FLEX time into a productive, relaxed environment where students take ownership of their learning.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for making this project possible. Your generosity turned a simple idea into a meaningful space where students feel calm, motivated, and proud of their work. Students' eyes lit up as they explored the resources for the first time, eagerly asking questions and brainstorming ideas for how they could use it. We immediately put the presser to work during a hands-on project where students designed their own shirts. Thanks to the new presser, they were able to bring their learning to life in a way that simply wasn't possible before.\r\n\r\nOne unforgettable moment was when a group of students, typically shy during class discussions, confidently presented their shirt design that they wanted to create and the whole class loved it . Having access to the right tools gave them a sense of ownership and pride in their learning. It was incredible to see how these resources didn't just support academic skills, but also boosted student confidence and collaboration.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we are using the heat press to launch a special project where students design and create their own custom t-shirts and tote bags. This project is helping them develop real-world skills in design, entrepreneurship, and collaboration. Students are brainstorming designs, learning about the production process, and even planning a small school market to showcase and sell their creations. With its responsive touchscreen and stylus, students are designing, editing, and bringing their visions to life in ways that weren't possible before. From creating original videos to editing newsletters and planning product labels, the computer has quickly become an essential tool in both our Graphic Arts Production Club and classroom instruction.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting transformations has been how seamlessly students have integrated the computer with our Cricut machine. Using the stylus, they're sketching out custom designs and turning them into real products—personalizing everything from sports helmets and locker nameplates to aprons for our student-run market. This hands-on digital creation process has allowed students to express themselves, collaborate, and take pride in projects that merge academics with entrepreneurship and real-world skills.\r\n\r\nYour donation didn't just provide a computer—it opened up a world of design, storytelling, and self-expression. They are taking ownership of their meals and sharing their knowledge with their peers through presentations and PSAs.\r\n\r\n💡 Building Responsibility & Teamwork: What makes this project truly special is the dedication of our students. They've created their own schedules, committed to their shifts, and shown up every day ready to learn and grow. Thanks to your support, we now have a full class set of The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis, and the transformation in my classroom has been incredible.\r\n\r\nThe Impact of Your Gift\r\n📖 Enhancing Reading Skills: Many of my students are English Language Learners (ELLs) who rely on finger-tracking for comprehension. Having their own copy of The Breadwinner has allowed them to build fluency, confidence, and independence as readers.\r\n\r\n🔎 Strengthening Comprehension Strategies: We have been diving deep into the Notice & Note reading strategies, identifying key moments in the text and analyzing them to strengthen critical thinking skills. These strategies have turned my students into more engaged and thoughtful readers.\r\n\r\n🌍 Expanding Cultural Awareness: This novel has sparked eye-opening discussions about resilience, survival, and the power of education—helping my students develop empathy and a broader global perspective. Many have expressed a newfound appreciation for their own opportunities and are eager to learn more about different cultures.\r\n\r\nA Classroom Transformed\r\nReading in my classroom has become more collaborative and engaging. Students eagerly follow along, highlight key passages, and discuss themes with their peers. They love making connections between the story and their own lives, which has made our classroom feel like a true learning community.\r\n\r\nOne student, in particular, has stood out—an ELL who was hesitant to read aloud at the beginning of the year. With The Breadwinner in hand, they've grown more confident, raising their hand to share insights and read aloud with pride. Seeing this transformation has been one of the most rewarding parts of this experience.\r\n\r\nA Heartfelt Thank You\r\nYour support has given my students the chance to develop stronger literacy skills while fostering a love of reading. With this new technology, we've been able to engage students in a hands-on project that combines entrepreneurship and financial literacy. For example, one group of students recently designed and created custom t-shirts and keychains to sell at a school fundraiser. Not only did they learn how to use the Cricut to cut intricate designs, but they also developed skills in budgeting, pricing, and marketing their products. Watching their designs come to life in front of their eyes was truly a magical moment for them, and their excitement was contagious. They immediately started brainstorming new products and ideas, eager to apply what they had learned.\r\n\r\nWhen the Cricut Maker 3 arrived, the students were absolutely thrilled. Their reactions ranged from disbelief to pure excitement, as many had never used a machine like this before. They were amazed by its precision and the variety of materials it could cut, from vinyl to fabric. It opened up a whole new world of possibilities for them, and they were excited to explore the intersection of creativity and business. This project has sparked a sense of ownership and pride in their work, as they not only learn valuable financial skills but also experience the satisfaction of creating something they can sell.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we are planning to expand our project by diving deeper into the concept of branding. Students will learn how to design their own logos and brand identities for the products they make. They will also apply their knowledge of profit margins and business strategy to take their merchandise to a larger market. With the Cricut, we're able to blend creativity and entrepreneurship in a way that feels real and empowering. This project has not only been a fun and engaging experience, but it has also provided our students with practical skills that they can use in the future.","fullyFundedDate":1730422580632,"projectUrl":"project/empowering-young-entrepreneurs-with-fina/8861767/","projectTitle":"Empowering Young Entrepreneurs with Financial Literacy Through Custom School Merch","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Rhein","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4004691_orig.png?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756961428583","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrsrhein"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_82296","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":772,"numTeachers":44,"percentFrplEligible":89,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":11,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":87,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 9","studentTeacherRatio":"17.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":70.0,"schoolId":82296,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Hubbard Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Hubbard Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-jersey/plainfield-public-school-district/hubbard-middle-school/82296"}
