Many of our students come from economically disadvantaged households, and a significant number of them are food-insecure. Life in NYC is never cheap, but in the past few years, prices across the board have skyrocketed. On top of that, our school is located in one of Manhattan's priciest areas—the West Village. So, though the neighborhood isn't what would usually be considered a \"food desert,\" for our students, the impact is the same—they don't have access to affordable options. If they don't bring food from home, their only option is the free but limited menu in our school cafeteria. Many of our students are still hungry throughout the day.\r\nThat's why I chose a selection of tasty, nutritious grab-and-go snacks for students to enjoy during classes. Thank you so much for helping to bring the snacks to them!\r\nNot only did students in my classes enjoy the snacks, but some shared with friends in other classes. I was happy to see students stop by my room in between classes to get something to eat. Because the snacks are portable and easy to access, there was no worry about missing class time to leave the building.\r\nSeveral students commented to me that the snacks were a real life saver. I heard more than once that the snacks in my room were the first things students had eaten that day. I intentionally chose items that were protein-rich, like nuts, meat sticks, and trail mixes, because I knew that these types of snacks would keep kids feeling full longer. \r\nClearly, poverty and food insecurity are huge issues that a small effort like this can't address. But these snacks were a huge help for the kids who enjoyed them, and they definitely made a difference. It is hard to put into words the support that I received from you all through DonorsChoose, especially given the budgeting crisis for arts programming in NYC. \r\n\r\nAs a teacher, it can be frustrating to not have the appropriate materials needed for art supplies for students, especially when they are so excited about creating.
