As I mentioned in my proposal, our students had been playing on a conference room table with a clamp-on net. This table was about 60 percent of regulation size. It provided a field of play, and engaged a number of students I wouldn't have imagined taking an interest in ping pong. But when we unpacked the Joola regulation-sized table your donations brought us, they were excited by its size even before they picked up their paddles.\r\n\r\nAt the outset, I want to emphasize that this table was not for my classroom per se. That's because I don't have a classroom; I am appointed here as a special education teacher. Since most of our special-needs population is served in integrated co-teaching classes, I move from classroom to classroom of what we call \"general education teachers\" and work with students who need additional support. \r\n\r\nSo, this ping-pong table, from the outset, was always meant for use by the entire school. In fact, as I observed our students playing on our provisional conference room table last fall, I noticed that a lot of students who normally wouldn't encounter one another socially were spending time at the table. As our principal often says, community is a core mission at our school. I saw an opportunity to create community and wrote my DonorChoose proposal the next morning.\r\n\r\nI don't exaggerate when I report—happily—that what I suspected would happen has: that this ping-pong has changed the culture of our school. Young people, especially this year's cohort of freshmen, who normally would not have crossed paths socially are becoming fast friends—and, of course, competitors at the ping-pong table.\r\n\r\nAnd it's not just students. Adults show up as well. Faculty members and administrators have turned up to participate in matches. These interactions have gone some distance toward creating a modest social cohesion between students and teachers, something I have long thought would benefit the culture of this school. I don't think I've worked in a school in my career where student and faculty relationships couldn't stand some improvement; this ping-pong table (upon which a speech therapist, a paraprofessional, and two students play a game of doubles as I write this).\r\n\r\nKids are even staying after school to play.\r\n\r\nMy principal goal in seeking a ping-pong table has been, I think, achieved: its arrival immediately improved our school culture, and it what I've seen as it is used is any indication, this will only continue. Which may move me to start another campaign for another table. But for now, I'll enjoy watching students use the table and the feeling of gratitude I have for your generosity.\r\n\r\nPlease forgive the tardiness of my reply. I encountered difficulty in securing media releases from parents to snap pictures to accompany this missive.","fullyFundedDate":1740768098291,"projectUrl":"project/a-lunchtime-ping-pong-table-for-our-smal/9027151/","projectTitle":"A Lunchtime Ping-Pong Table for Our Small School","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Feltskog","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9780767_orig.jpg?crop=1440,1440,x243,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1736172869305","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9780767"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_2155","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":367,"numTeachers":29,"percentFrplEligible":81,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":73,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":2,"percentLatinx":16,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"12.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":47.4,"schoolId":2155,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about High School for Public Service on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"High School for Public Service","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/hs-for-public-service/2155"}
