Because the instruments are color-coded and easy to play, students can immediately experience success while exploring rhythm and pitch. This has made learning more engaging and approachable for all students, including those who may not yet be comfortable reading traditional music notation. The Boomwhackers have allowed them to practice composing their own melodies, giving them the confidence to see themselves as real music creators.\r\n\r\nThe impact of these instruments goes beyond music skills—students are learning collaboration, patience, and the joy of creating something together. In our high-need community, the chance to make music in this hands-on way has been especially empowering, giving students a positive outlet for expression and supporting their social and emotional growth. The excitement in the classroom is clear every time we use the Boomwhackers; students are eager to try new ideas, share their creations, and celebrate their progress. This gift has truly helped them find their voices through music and built experiences they will carry with them well beyond elementary school.","fullyFundedDate":1709754457664,"projectUrl":"project/boomin-boomwhackers/8076797/","projectTitle":"Boomin' Boomwhackers","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Soliz","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3980465_orig.jpg?crop=1819,1819,x58,y85&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1668723728874","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3980465"},{"teacherId":7160237,"projectId":9019709,"letterContent":"We appreciate the donations of prizes and gifts for the students. Having an instrument in their hands has given them the chance to not only sing, but also accompany themselves, making their musical experience richer and more meaningful. Students are gaining confidence as they combine playing and singing, and the joy they feel when they master a new chord or perform a song is inspiring to watch. The ukuleles have created a stronger sense of independence in their musicianship, while also encouraging teamwork as they learn to play together in class.\r\n\r\nBeyond performance skills, the ukuleles are sparking creativity and self-expression. Students are beginning to write their own songs, experimenting with chords and melodies that reflect their ideas and emotions. They are also being introduced to music from different cultures and genres, broadening their appreciation for the diverse ways music connects people. The excitement and pride the students feel when playing their ukuleles show just how impactful this gift has been. This experience will not only enrich their time in choir but will also give them lasting memories and skills they can carry with them for years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1670886952728,"projectUrl":"project/making-musicians-with-ukuleles/7022981/","projectTitle":"Making Musicians With Ukuleles","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Soliz","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3980465_orig.jpg?crop=1819,1819,x58,y85&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1668723728874","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3980465"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_37731","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":378,"numTeachers":16,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":82,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"23.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":67.1,"schoolId":37731,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Horton Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Horton Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/san-diego-unified-school-district/horton-elementary-school/37731"}
