My students come from at-risk situations (poverty, large families, worn-torn countries, etc). Because of these situations, concentration is difficult because many of their basic needs have not been met and many struggle with attention deficits. In addition, our school has been fashioned out of a warehouse that was not meant to provide applicable sound barriers to the next classroom, therefore; background noise can be very distracting. Finally, many of our students are English language learners from war-torn countries who have difficulty learning pronunciation/enunciation because background noise distorts what they hear.\r\n\r\nThese factors make it very hard for students to concentrate during testing and for my ELLs; it delays progress toward learning English. However, with the addition of noise-canceling headphones, my students can now focus on the task instead of outside distractions. ELLs can hear distinctively when they are read to through the headphones. We just had a mid-year checkup and the students all said the headphones helped them focus better.\r\n\r\nSince most of my students are \"gamers\" they are used to the ease that results when manipulating computer tasks with a controller. With the addition of the computer mice, they are effortlessly able to focus on the test instead of manipulating the cursor using keys. This has made test-taking much more efficient. All of my students ask for the mice anytime we are on the computer now, which solidifies in my mind that the mice are a good addition to the classroom.\r\n\r\nWith people like you, we can continue to provide the necessary items to enhance learning environments for all students. The students and I appreciate heroes like you because our budgetary constraints do not allow for such enhancements. Finally, although the headphones and mice were particularly acquired for these two classrooms, many students in future years will also be able to benefit as they will be used every year.
