Your kindness and support have made a meaningful impact on my students, and I am thrilled to share how this donation has already begun to enrich their reading and learning experiences.\r\n\r\nIn my experience, and as the data supports, the single best way I can support students in their writing and English skills is to help them become stronger readers. This is becoming increasingly difficult for many reasons. As we know too well, now I have to compete with devices, TikTok, and shortened attention spans as students prioritize phones in their \"free time\". Furthermore, Infinite Campus emphasizes short-term \"points in the gradebook\" over long-term learning and skills acquisition (like reading and writing). I have asked my students to reflect on reading habits, and many say \"they don't have time\". I wish they could see that stronger reading skills are a \"value add\" to all of the other homework they have to do - it's not just extra work. I find students shutting down more often than not when confronted with ideas they don't understand. In my experience, the concept of boredom is unnatural, and struggle and persistence - rare.\r\n\r\nThe novels you provided have helped me to create a culture of reading in my classroom and have opened up a world of possibilities for my students. Many of them are discovering stories that resonate with their personal experiences, sparking a newfound love for reading - high interest true crime stories, novels with authors of color and diverse experiences, and novels selected specifically for males, a population who the data show are struggling with reading the most. The ability to choose books and be literally surrounded by texts that interest them has fostered a sense of ownership over their education, encouraging deeper engagement and critical thinking. They are in book clubs, talking and contributing to academic discussions about books with their peers - I couldn't ask for more.\r\n\r\nYour support means more than just new books on our shelves. It represents an investment in young minds. For some of my students, this may be their first step toward becoming lifelong readers. For others, it teaches empathy. Reading helps us understand other peoples' perspectives. It can transport a student into the mind of someone who lived hundreds of years ago or a person who lives in a radically different context from our own. Looking at the world in different lights is one of the most vital things one can do in the pursuit of growth, especially in 2024 (am I right?). According to the New York Times, scientists have come to realize that narratives activate many parts of our brains, suggesting why the experience of reading can feel so alive. Words like \"lavender,\" \"cinnamon\" and \"soap,\" for example, elicit a response not only from the language-processing areas of our brains, but from those devoted to dealing with smells. Long story short - we experience what characters in our books experience. Reading englarges us. It improves us as human beings.\r\n\r\nOn behalf of my students and myself, thank you for believing in the power of education and for making this opportunity possible. Your generosity reminds us of the goodness and compassion that exists in the world, and we are so grateful to be the recipients of it.","fullyFundedDate":1728482890898,"projectUrl":"project/get-them-to-the-shelves/8844410/","projectTitle":"Get Them to the Shelves!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kubsch","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9232405_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1744957596918","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9232405"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_54193","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1966,"numTeachers":94,"percentFrplEligible":54,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":53,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":34,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"20.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":60.4,"schoolId":54193,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Horizon High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Horizon High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/colorado/adams-12-five-star-schools/horizon-high-school/54193"}
