They designed and printed custom football helmets, including a detailed Titan helmet, where they had to think critically about shape, structure, and scale. Others created personalized keychains, allowing them to express individuality while learning precision in design and manufacturing.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting applications came during our CO₂ car race unit. Instead of using pre-made kits, students designed and 3D printed their own cars from scratch. They tested different shapes, weights, and aerodynamics, then iterated on their designs to improve performance. Watching students race cars they personally designed and manufactured was an incredible moment—it brought engineering concepts to life in a competitive and engaging way.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the filament supply, there was immediate excitement. Many realized they now had the freedom to prototype, fail, and try again without the limitations they previously faced. That shift—from \"I hope this works\" to \"I can improve this\"—has been powerful in developing a true engineering mindset.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these materials allowed students to learn through real prototyping experiences. They weren't just designing on a screen—they were producing functional parts, testing them, and refining their ideas just like real engineers. This hands-on approach has strengthened their understanding of design, manufacturing, and problem-solving.\r\n\r\nNext, students will continue building on these skills by creating more complex, multi-part designs and exploring how 3D printing can be used for both functional prototypes and marketable products. Because of your support, they are gaining confidence, technical skills, and the ability to turn ideas into reality.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping us create opportunities where students don't just learn engineering—they experience it.","fullyFundedDate":1770302668301,"projectUrl":"project/3d-printing-filament/10018996/","projectTitle":"3D Printing Filament","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Desmond","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3470979_orig.jpg?crop=603,603,x26,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1651434389095","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3470979"},{"teacherId":3470979,"projectId":9982041,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, students in Hopewell Engineering and Manufacturing have been able to experience what it truly means to design, build, and give back through real-world manufacturing.\r\n\r\nWith the basswood and walnut sheets, students were able to iterate on scaled versions of a \"Stadium of the Future.\" Instead of stopping at a single prototype, they tested multiple design variations—adjusting structure, layout, and material use each time. This iterative process helped them better understand how engineers refine ideas through testing and improvement, not just initial design.\r\n\r\nOne of the most meaningful moments came when students used these materials to create custom laser-cut ornaments for our exceptional children's students. They carefully designed, engraved, and produced personalized pieces, knowing their work would directly impact others in their school community. Seeing the pride on both sides—the creators and the recipients—was something special. It helped students realize that engineering isn't just about building things; it's about making a difference.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, students were immediately excited. The quality of the basswood and walnut elevated their work, and many commented on how \"professional\" their projects felt. That excitement quickly turned into focus as they began turning their ideas into tangible, high-quality products.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these resources have allowed students in Hopewell Engineering and Manufacturing to learn through authentic manufacturing experiences. They are not just completing assignments—they are designing, producing, and iterating on real projects with real purpose. They are gaining hands-on skills in fabrication, precision, and problem-solving while also understanding how their work can positively impact others.\r\n\r\nNext, students will continue refining their designs and expanding into projects that combine engineering with entrepreneurship and community impact. Because of your support, they are developing both technical skills and a deeper sense of responsibility as creators.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping us create a classroom where students learn by doing—and where their work truly matters.","fullyFundedDate":1768436752936,"projectUrl":"project/from-screen-to-spark-students-bringing/9982041/","projectTitle":"From Screen to Spark: Students Bringing Designs to Life","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Desmond","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3470979_orig.jpg?crop=603,603,x26,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1651434389095","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3470979"},{"teacherId":9710693,"projectId":9789890,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support in providing snacks for our classroom!
