Instead of guessing, they could physically build and compare fractions, and suddenly concepts that had seemed confusing finally clicked. It was exciting to watch students who had been struggling become eager to solve problems and even help their classmates.\r\n\r\nSince introducing these hands-on resources, I have noticed tremendous growth in my students' understanding of fractions and their ability to use them in computations. As a special education teacher, part of my job is to provide a safe, calm space for kids to regulate their \"big feelings.\" This space needs to be private yet visible, comfortable, safe and calming. The items you provided through your donations helped me create this space for my students. \r\n\r\nOne of the most important items you helped provide is the breathing koala machine. This soft silicone koala lights up at intervals to help children practice deep breathing, which calms the nervous system and regulates impulsivity. The koala is a friendly, engaging way for kids to practice this essential technique when they are dysregulated. \r\n\r\nThe other items, like the tepee tent, star lights and pillows give my students a comfortable space to rest, relax, take a mental break or regulate emotions. Many of my students simply like to lie in the tent and fidget with sensory toys while on a mental break from their intervention work. The tent has also been used by students who get over-tired and simply need to take a nap.\r\n\r\nAgain, I so appreciate your donations to my small, rural classroom. Students of all grades still love to be read to, and these books will provide excellent jumping-off points for simple discussions and lessons in concepts like self-love, making mistakes, caring for others, big feelings and more.\r\n\r\nThe books you provided also represent the \"Mirror-Window\" concept for my students. I purposefully chose books that would act as a mirror to help students see themselves in the stories they are reading. But I also chose books that provide a window to help students see beyond the small, rural community we live in. The books feature students from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds, which will help broaden student's perspectives while teaching social-emotional lessons. \r\n\r\nThank you again for supporting my project. It is also a spot where students who have \"big feelings,\" emotional outbursts, or just need a break from their general education classroom can come. The staff and I in my room provide compassionate support and calming techniques for students who struggle with emotional regulation. If students are emotionally dysregulated, it is difficult for them to focus on learning. \r\n\r\nThe sensory items we had were old, grungy, and definitely well-used. The sensory tools you provided offer students a range of options for regulating and calming themselves. I purposely chose items that could be squeezed, twisted, watched, or give a soft sensory feeling or sound. This allows the student to focus their energy on the item, enabling them to calm their emotions healthily and efficiently.
