When the materials were delivered to our classroom, it truly felt like Christmas morning. The excitement was real — not just for me, but especially for the students. On the first day of school, they walked in wide-eyed and amazed as they saw my vision for our classroom come to life.\r\n\r\nOriginally, I had planned an Alice in Wonderland theme, but after receiving our class roster — with lots of energetic boys and just one girl — my amazing TA and I made a creative pivot. We transformed the room into a vibrant Mario Bros.-inspired world, and it looks so cool! We hand-painted life-size characters and decorated the walls with colorful scenes that brought the video game to life. Our message to the students: school is like a video game — we're starting at Level 1, building our skills and abilities, and working toward beating that big boss at the end of the year!\r\n\r\nThe theme was a huge hit, and the best part is: we're planning to switch up the decor throughout the year to keep things fresh and engaging.\r\n\r\nNow, about those donations — they're game-changers! We've created fun and inviting centers throughout the room, each with its own cozy rug and themed decor. More importantly, each center offers something hands-on and exciting. My goal is to help students get back to using their hands and their minds — not letting iPads do all the thinking for them.\r\n\r\nThanks to you, my students are building with magnetic tiles and blocks, solving wooden puzzles, and playing cooperative games that spark creativity, teamwork, and joy. We're still hitting the books — pencil and paper are alive and well — but let's be honest: playtime is where some of the most meaningful learning happens. And now, thanks to your support, our playtime is more purposeful, fun, and magical than ever.\r\n\r\nThis year, we're going to power up and level up together. My students are learning that even when we get knocked down, we get to choose whether we keep going. They're learning that they are in control of their own \"game.\"\r\n\r\nFrom the bottom of my heart — thank you for helping us make this classroom the coolest in the school. 💛🍄🎮","fullyFundedDate":1753120387576,"projectUrl":"project/down-the-rabbit-hole-creating-a-safe-an/9433847/","projectTitle":"Down the Rabbit Hole: Creating a Safe and Magical Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Jen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10064070"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_2878","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":839,"numTeachers":64,"percentFrplEligible":55,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":18,"percentWhite":45,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":26,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"13.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":62.7,"schoolId":2878,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Highland Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Highland Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/harnett-county-school-district/highland-elementary-school/2878"}
