We are about to start Refugee as a precursor to the unit these books are for. I'm very excited to get to the book groups though!\r\n\r\nThe following is some of what we will do with the book groups:\r\n-Poetry analysis comparing the idea of \"the American Dream\" to their group texts using Langston Hughes and Walt Whitman (perhaps more).\r\n-Tracking the struggles or barriers the characters face throughout the novel.\r\n-Research on refugees (my 8th grade reads Call Me American, so this is a good introduction to that).\r\n-Personal writing on what \"the American Dream\" is to them with comparisons to their characters.","fullyFundedDate":1758824073823,"projectUrl":"project/bringing-diverse-stories-to-rural-middle/9617933/","projectTitle":"Bringing Diverse Stories to Rural Middle Schoolers","teacherDisplayName":"Mx. I have two different classes reading it, so the fact that the board is reversible is super helpful. No spoilers! We can also edit as characters change (which is better than when we tracked using permanent marker on poster paper before). After each chapter, kids come up and add to the board as needed with feedback from the rest of the class. Because I have very little board space in my room other than this, I have been able to do much more tracking with students!\r\n\r\nThe kids were definitely excited about the board, and before we started character tracking, a few of my homeroom students were using it to play literacy games entirely unprompted by me, which was cute!\r\n\r\nI'm very excited for Spring when the snow melts, and we can take the board outside to do poetry! The mobility of the board with be so useful.
