I was able to use the majority of the books to help teach social-emotional lessons that could tie in with our content lessons. 5th grade students love when teachers use picture books to teach lessons. I believe these books are more accessible to kids and allow the connect with the text and apply the skills in their lives. Our conversations were deep and meaningful, and some of the favorites from kids' reflections at the end of the year!\r\nA few of the other books were used to help with student research. When using research books, some kids have a hard time deciphering information, which is why again, I like to use \"'picture books\" to help. One big writing project we work on each year is about native americans. This year, I used some new books to introduce these topics. \r\nThank you again for your contribution to our classroom! With your generous donations towards this project, students have been able to bring Ancient Civilizations to life. Students have had access to supplies to create projects and tasks that range from the arts to STEM. Here is a list of some of the amazing projects students have been able to take part in:\r\nAncient Election Campaigns. (Students are in groups where they are given a leader from a civilization. Students select a specific role to help create an election campaign for that leader).\r\nLandmark Replica (Students use materials to recreate a landmark replica which they then present to the class).\r\nWorkshops (These have included: yoga & meditation, spice testing, chopstick etiquette, fan art, mandala coloring, greek olympics, traditional writing, greek performances. \r\nSimulations (Students participate in a scenario that imitates the actions and dialogue of people who lived during an ancient civilization. \r\nInteractive Notebooks (Students create their own notes in an interactive process. From jigsaw pieces to flip books)\r\n\r\nStudents have been so engaged and have loved having the opportunities to do much more than read from a textbook. Once again, none of this would have been possible without your donations. Additionally, we were able to also create artifacts related to holidays and traditions that still continue in other parts of the world. Students specifically enjoyed creating lanterns for Lunar New Year as well as finding more out about their zodiac animal. Our classroom has been transformed to represent various and different cultures and places. It has been a joy and privilege to see students so curious and excited to learn because of these projects and activities that you have helped fund. Your generosity is never underappreciated and I have made sure that students know their project materials were a team effort. \r\n\r\nThank you so much from all of us in Mrs. Kepferle's 6th grade classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1723671134289,"projectUrl":"project/around-the-world-past-and-present/8617440/","projectTitle":"Around the World: Past and Present","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Kepferle","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9643555"},{"teacherId":9695666,"projectId":8842521,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting this project. We have a new Science curriculum. To support the lessons there was a list of picture and trade books that did not come with the curriculum. These picture/trade books are a wonderful addition to the curriculum as it allows kids to visualize the information in a different ways. There are always colorful pictures and photographs that enhance the understanding of the information being taught.\r\n These books allow teachers to use them in a variety of ways. They can be used for exploration - laying them out and having students look at them independently. They can be used with partners to allow students to share with each other what they are learning or find interesting. They can be read aloud to the entire class for discussion or question and answer time.\r\n We also have had an increase in minority populations in recent years. Some of these students are fluent in languages other than English. We were able to get a few of these titles to help support these students.\r\n One of the teachers who is able to use these new books said, \"The team is over the moon excited to have these books to help the students better understand the content and promote great discussion!\" I believe even the students would echo this statement.\r\n Thank you again for your support for this new part of our curriculum. With each of the items I received it has made for a better teaching environment and has helped my students achieve goals that we made for them at the beginning of the year. The wobble stools offer students a chance to be able to move around freely without getting out of their seats.\r\nBeing able to add the greenery to my room has made the room seem more inviting and the students loved the plants with faces on them sitting up front. I have found that even though they are fake plants they add to the classroom environment by giving it a homey feeling and allowing it to seem like a welcome place for all to come to.
