The materials that you provided for my classroom allowed my students a great way to visualize the process by modeling transcription and translation. \r\nThe activity brought many light bulb moments to my students. The biggest \"ah-ha\" moment was the connection of how our genetic makeup is a direct result of the proteins our cells make. The activity you donated to my classroom sets up for the students this scenario: \"As a part of mandatory medical screening procedures, a baby girl's blood is sampled and diagnosed the baby with sickle-cell anemia. The parents are shocked with the news because neither of them has the disease.\" The activity continues as each student progresses through a series of stations located around the room to answer the driving question: \"How could this child develop sickle-cell anemia if neither of her parents had it?\" Each station required students to decode the child's DNA by transcribing DNA into mRNA and then translating the mRNA to the protein coding for sickle-cell anemia. To complete the activity, students then compare the amino acid sequences of the child to that of each parent, analyzing that the child inherited recessive alleles from each parent, resulting in sickle-cell anemia. \r\nThe other activity that you generously donated was the game \"Peptide - A Protein Building Game\". My students loved playing this! I waited to use this game as a review of protein synthesis. This creative game kept my students engaged while utilizing all the new vocabulary that they learned during this unit. To goal in the game is to create a protein, made up of amino acids and peptide bonds which allowed students to review the entire process of transcription and translation.\r\nBoth of these activities enhanced my students' understanding of protein synthesis. Thanks you so much for your donation!","fullyFundedDate":1733157035895,"projectUrl":"project/learning-about-protein-synthesis-transc/8801720/","projectTitle":"Learning About Protein Synthesis -Transcription and Translation in Biology","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Reno","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9762692"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_78487","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":515,"numTeachers":39,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":71,"percentIndigenous":17,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"13.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":100.0,"schoolId":78487,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Havre High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Havre High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/montana/havre-school-district-16-a/havre-high-school/78487"}
