They had substitutes about half the year. In addition to that I have several students who have attention issues, hyperactivity and emotional issues. The calming tools you provided our classroom with are a lifesaver to me and all my students. \r\n\r\nWe use the weighted blankets when we are doing whole group activities in the rug and some students are having trouble sitting still. The weighted blankets have helped prevent others from getting hurt because students are twisting, turning and kicking in the carpet. They like feeling the weight and touching the soft blankets and they help calm them down. Sometimes they use them at the tables when they feel they need help sitting still. I have a Peace Corner with breathing tools, calming widgets and our bean bag which they love. The Peace Corner is used when students are feeling upset and need a break. Sometimes they request it and other times I suggest it. Having various tools to help calm them has improved our classroom culture.\r\n\r\nLast year students would complain, avoid and blame our two most active students because they were often loud and had trouble controling their body. Sometimes their actions would hurt others. Now the two most active students get along much better with the rest of the class and cause less disruptions. We use them everyday for varios things. I have a couple who volunteers with me every day. Ms. Laura reads with the students one on one and spends time talking about the books they read. This is very important because all of my students are English Learners and they need practice speaking in English. She has been volunteering in my class for 3 years now and has become a great asset to our classroom. On the other table is her husband Mr. Carlos, who is bilingual. He works with students in number recognition, sight words, letter recognition and varios other things. He is essential in the classroom as well because he provides support to the students who are struggling the most and need to repeat things everyday in order to learn them. While they are working with students one on one, I am teaching a whole group lesson or pulling small groups to do what ever needs to be done. In addition to Ms. Laura and Mr. Carlos, we have teacher who comes in to work in Reading for 5-10 minutes with most of the students. Ms. Virginia also uses the side tables. Finally, when we have testing, playtime or need to separate students for any reason the tables serve as a great resource. The tables also allow for more space than my previous arrangement so walking through the classroom is less cumbersome. Thank you so much for the tutoring tables. The pouches keep their pencils and crayons organized, so they don't have to ask me every minute where their pencils are. It takes about 7 days for the seeds to germinate and for us to see sprouting. Some of the students' pots have sprouted rather quickly. The shower caps are used to maintain a warm and well moisture environment for seeds to germinate. It acts as a greenhouse, which was a lesson in and of itself. This week's lesson will be about photosynthesis and pollination. I am excited because this lesson touches so many different aspects of student learning. \r\n\r\nFrom previous experience of doing this same lesson, both families and students really love this.
