As a Kindergarten teacher, I am aware of the special needs these young learners have. One of the biggest challenge for them is whole body listening during whole group lessons on the carpet. The cause of their wiggles mostly stem from needing some sensory input or sensory breaks to help them focus.\r\n\r\nI selected items that can provide this sensory input. I choose cushions that allows students to balance and get some wiggles out during whole group lessons. I also choose a seat with a back rest since some students struggle with sustaining \"criss cross apple sauce\" sitting position for extended period of time. I also choose fidget items that can be used while learning to keep hands busy and bodies still. The fidgets are also a wonderful resource for our \"Peace Place\". That is a place that students can take a break and reset. This is helpful because kindergarteners sometimes feel overwhelmed and have big feelings. The \"Peace Place\" provides a setting that is away from the majority of the class but within sight and hearing of the lessons.\r\n\r\nMy co-teacher and I saw a tremendous difference the day we implemented the flexible seating that was offered. Students who otherwise were wiggling and unfocused were now attending to the lesson.
