For this project, we brought physical activity into our lesson! The students are used to being inside the classroom, and I'm happy that we could go outside for this activity. I designed a small obstacle course on the front lawn of our school campus using the cones, hoops, and traffic signs. All students accompanied me outside and 30% of the students participated in the obstacle course (i.e. running the course). Even though that may seem like a low number, I count it as a huge success because the students were engaged, they understood the connection, and they were showing teamwork by supporting each other. Your contribution has made an incredible impact on our Adapted Curriculum program at Grimsley High School. As a program we are truly overwhelmed by your thoughtfulness and kindness.\r\n\r\nOur new refrigerator has helped to take our program to a new level. We can now store snacks, lunches, or supplies needed for our Whirlie Café (which is an in-house coffee shop located on campus for teachers and staff), or food for our weekly cooking lessons. It will not only help in providing healthy food, keeping things organized, creating a more functional learning environment, but it will also bring a sense of relief and comfort to our students.\r\n\r\nOur refrigerator has become a valuable asset in a special education classroom, particularly for programs focused on life skills, adapted curriculum, or functional academics. Here's how we will plan to utilize it for future instruction:\r\n\r\n1. Life Skills Instruction: A refrigerator is essential for teaching students basic life skills, such as meal preparation and food storage. Students can learn how to properly store perishables, identify food safety practices, and plan meals, which fosters independence.\r\n2. Behavioral Support: In some cases, students on specialized diets or those with sensory issues may need access to specific foods or snacks throughout the day. Having a refrigerator allows for proper storage and access to these items, helping manage behaviors linked to hunger, anxiety, or dietary needs.\r\n3. Occupational Therapy: For students working on fine motor skills, activities like opening containers or arranging items in the fridge can be part of occupational therapy tasks that improve hand-eye coordination and dexterity.\r\n4. Incentive and Reward System: Snacks or special treats stored in a classroom fridge can be used as part of a reward system, helping with motivation and positive reinforcement of behaviors.\r\n5. Regulating Temperature-Sensitive Items: Some special education classrooms may include sensory tools like cooling packs, weighted blankets, or cold therapy items that are stored in the fridge for use during sensory breaks to help students self-regulate.\r\n6. Whirlie Cafe Supplies: The refrigerator will also be used for storing our ingredients and materials needed for our in-house coffee shop that is run by our students.\r\nIncluding a refrigerator in our special education classroom significantly enhances the educational value of our program, allows students to gain essential life skills, helpps promote independence, and supports a variety of functional and vocational learning needs.\r\nYour support for our program means the world to us, and it is so heartwarming to know that there are people like you who care so deeply about education and the well-being of our students. Because of you, we are able to continue striving toward excellence and making learning experiences more enriching for everyone.\r\n\r\nThank you once again for your thoughtfulness and generosity. The difference you've made is truly appreciated, and we are all so grateful to you.\r\n\r\nWith sincere appreciation,\r\nThe Adapted Curriculum Teachers\r\nGrimsley High School","fullyFundedDate":1723676941915,"projectUrl":"project/whirlie-cafe-appliance-refrigerator/8506280/","projectTitle":"Whirlie Cafe Appliance -Refrigerator","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lewis","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ghs-ac-stove"},{"teacherId":9091028,"projectId":8774077,"letterContent":"Thank you donors so much for your generous gifts to my class.
