Our school has 15 different languages spoken in it by our students and staff. My classroom of 20 has 50% of the students living 200% below the poverty level and 25% of my students are ELL/ESL. \r\n\r\nI believe that art-music, painting, sculpting, dancing, etc is a beneficial way for students to be able to communicate and express themselves. Most of my students do not have markers or crayons at home and never get the opportunity to paint or create. \r\n\r\nYour donations have given these students the opportunity to explore materials, find ways to express themselves, communicate, and gain pride in their abilities. Your donations have provided unmeasurable joy to our classroom. Although our curriculum includes English/Spanish books I am not fluent in Spanish and my Spanish readings are choppy. The manipulatives that you helped provide for my class breaks down our language barrier. \r\n\r\nEach day I am able to pull small groups of students and use the manipulatives so that I can communicate with them and they are able to communicate with each other. We use the items to build language skills and early reading skills. \r\n\r\nThe students get excited when they see new manipulatives our every Monday. I will demonstrate the intended use of the materials and I assist the students in using them either one on one or in small groups. Students are encouraged to play with the materials and take turns with a partner. All of these things encourages and fosters cooperation and communication as well as the early steps to literacy - and being kindergarten ready.
