Now more than ever, teenagers face increased challenges navigating the social and emotional aspects of their world. As a teacher, I have witnessed a decline in student ability and comfort interacting with each other in person. Having conversations \"face to face\" is difficult for them. In talking with my students, they shared that lacking this skill can feel very isolating, but it feels easier and more comfortable to talk via text or apps. As a result these students struggle with mental health, making friends, and making real human connections with their family and peers. Students also struggle to find a sense of community and belonging off the screen. I strive to make efforts to support my students beyond the academic curriculum by making the Green Level Chorus Community a place where students can thrive socially and emotionally, feel safe and find a community that provides friendship and support. And while I do activities and have created a classroom environment that supports these goals, I wanted to create an event that would have a meaningful impact on these struggles in a big way. Through the generous contributions from Donors Choose we were able to create an event that did just that. \r\nFor our event, our entire chorus community, including over 100 students, their parents and their siblings came together at a local park to share food, conversation and play field day type games. The items collected through Donors Choose were used to facilitate friendly competition among the students and their families which resulted in everyone forming new relationships, a whole lot of laughter and a great deal of fun. Parents and students have since shared with me that Chorus Day has been the highlight of their school year and they hope we make it a tradition for years to come. \r\nThe day began as an event to get three separate chorus classes to come together and just meet. By the end of the day, students who were previously strangers were hanging out, sharing stories, and spontaneously singing with each other. One chorus family told me that they had never witnessed a school event that brought families together the way this one had. Another shared that they witnessed their student, who is typically quiet and reserved, comfortably making new friends. \r\nTug of war was particularly popular as close games resulted in other students (or parents!) jumping in to assist at the last minute to turn the tides. However, the favorite of the day was definitely the giant parachute. A recall back to their elementary school days, my high school singers worked together to create the classic parachute dome. Underneath they laughed and sang while the parents filmed and took photos from the outside. \r\nWe at the Green Level Chorus cannot thank you enough for providing us with the supplies needed to make this event affordable and successful. We will use these items for many years to come as we continue to build community, student confidence, and help students find a place where they belong.","fullyFundedDate":1728344194816,"projectUrl":"project/chorus-day/8864634/","projectTitle":"Chorus Day","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Faust","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9797151"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_124533","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2000,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":40,"percentAsian":45,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":38,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":6,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 10","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":77.1,"schoolId":124533,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Green Level High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Green Level High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/wake-county-public-school-system/green-level-high-school/124533"}
