In addition to building literacy and writing skills, I work hard to teach my students life skills such as compassion, honesty, patience, cooperation, and responsible citizenship. Having access to high-interest, age-appropriate current events has made an immediate and meaningful difference in helping me meet these goals.\r\n\r\nScholastic Action has opened a window to the world beyond our school and neighborhood. With each issue, students explore real-world events, discuss meaningful topics, and develop a stronger understanding of the society they are growing up in. These conversations are helping them become informed, thoughtful young citizens who recognize possibilities and opportunities outside their own community.\r\n\r\nThe magazines have also strengthened classroom engagement. Students read articles during partner work, silent reading, and whole-class discussions, and they are genuinely excited to dive in. Their enthusiasm shows that reading is not just a skill but an active, collaborative, and meaningful part of their day. This beautifully written Coretta Scott King Author Honor Book opened the door for my students to explore segregation, discrimination, resilience, and the transformative power of poetry through a story they truly connected with. Langston's journey from Alabama to Chicago allowed my students to see history through the eyes of a relatable young narrator, deepening their understanding of the Great Migration and the emotional impact of leaving home.\r\n\r\nThis project had a powerful impact on my students' learning. Many of them had never read a historical fiction novel that intertwined poetry and identity in such an accessible way. As they met Langston and watched him discover the library—and the poet he was named after—my students found themselves asking thoughtful questions, drawing meaningful inferences, and making personal connections about belonging, grief, and courage. These materials allowed me to design lessons that blended history, literature, and poetry, helping students expand both their literacy skills and cultural awareness.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, I was able to provide each student with their own copy of the novel, which allowed us to annotate together, discuss key passages, and build reading stamina. Esplin. Your contribution brought this powerful, high-interest book directly into the hands of my students, and it has made an incredible difference. Middle schoolers are at a stage where they're discovering who they are, what they value, and how they interact with the world around them. This novel—fast-paced, suspenseful, and emotionally rich—captured their attention from the very first chapter and gave even my most reluctant readers something to be excited about. Students connected with the Lockwood brothers' struggle, their resilience, and their unwavering bond, often stopping mid-reading to discuss choices the characters made or predict what they would have done differently.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, we were able to conduct meaningful group discussions that deepened both comprehension and community. Students explored the novel's themes of survival ethics, self-reliance, family loyalty, and moral decision-making during crisis. These conversations helped them develop critical thinking and empathy as they reflected on how hardships can shape someone's character. Having a classroom set of the book also allowed me to structure collaborative activities, evidence-based debates, and writing reflections that strengthened literacy skills and built confidence in expressing ideas.\r\n\r\nYour support made 96 Miles more than just a novel—it became an unforgettable learning experience that enriched our classroom academically, socially, and emotionally. Students are developing stronger impulse control as they carefully plan each move, and they are strengthening their strategic thinking and problem-solving skills every time they approach the tower. What may look like \"just a game\" is truly a hands-on learning tool that helps students practice patience, focus, and decision-making in an engaging, low-pressure environment.\r\n\r\nGiant Jenga has also transformed our recess times and indoor activity days. When students play in teams, they naturally fall into roles, communicate more effectively, and learn to cooperate toward a common goal. The teamwork and collaboration we see during these games carry over into our academic activities, helping students build trust and positive relationships with one another. With clear audio and the ability to focus without outside distractions, my students are fully engaging with these resources in a way they simply could not before.\r\n\r\nFor my struggling readers, the option to hear passages read aloud while following along visually has been transformational. It strengthens comprehension, builds confidence, and helps them access grade-level content they would otherwise find overwhelming. The headphones are also essential for our ESL students whose personal electronic devices can now read tests to them; this support allows them to demonstrate what they truly know, rather than being held back by language barriers.\r\nYour kindness has given my students independence, improved access to digital learning tools, and a more equitable classroom environment. During our reading and writing lessons, students now volunteer eagerly to come to the board to annotate text, model sentence revisions, and demonstrate how they identified figurative language. Even my quieter students are raising their hands to participate because the tablet feels less intimidating and more fun than standing at the traditional whiteboard.\r\nOne of my favorite moments happened during our lesson on theme. A student who usually avoids sharing his work asked if he could use the tablet to show his thinking. He used the pen to highlight key evidence from the text and then sketched a quick symbol that represented the story's message. The class actually applauded him — a small but meaningful moment of confidence that I don't think would have happened without this tool.\r\nWe've also begun incorporating more visual and creative elements into our ELA activities. Students are using the tablet to help design slides for group projects, annotate their digital texts, and even create small illustrations to accompany their writing. The excitement on their faces when they realize they can blend art with literacy has been priceless.\r\nYour support has given my students more than a tablet — you've given them a way to move, create, explore, and express themselves in ways that weren't possible before. Many of my students don't have access to devices like this at home, so having it in our classroom helps level the playing field and opens doors to new types of learning.\r\nFrom the bottom of my heart, and on behalf of every student who has picked up the pen with a smile this year, thank you for investing in our classroom.
