The gentle lighting from the lamps replaces harsh fluorescents, creating a peaceful, inviting atmosphere that immediately puts students at ease. This has improved our understanding of addition-putting together and subtraction-taking away. The Lego kits also helped us practice working as a team to accomplish a task. The Magna Tiles have also helped with math and science reasoning and understanding. As I've pulled these materials out, students have gotten increasingly excited to use them and interact with each other. My goal was two-fold for this - I wanted students to interact with each other without a screen and to build creativity. These materials allow me to push both of these objectives. \r\n\r\nThe magna-tiles, gears, and tangrams were selected with the idea of building collaboration without technology. I wanted students to be able to play and create together with no end-goal in mind. This boosts creativity, friendship, sharing skills, and so many other soft skills that students don't get much time to practice anymore. \r\n\r\nThe books with CDs allow me to grow the listening section of the library. Many students find the library inaccessible due to difficulty reading. This section allows them to access to many different types of stories. They also work together on this because these stations work with \"old-school\" traditional CD players. Students get to listen and build camaraderie with each other (again, without the use of screens and digital devices). \r\n\r\nOverall, I've found this increases students interest in all the aspects of the library as well as gives them additional sense of self in a positive manner.
